I’m overjoyed & honoured to have won the Plaza Prize for Poetry judged by Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Natalie Diaz —whose work I adore & admire immensely. To have one’s poems read at all, let alone by one of your poet-heroes & to have them reflect so generously on the poem is a gift beyond measure.

Friends, I wrote a piece on poet Laura Gilpin, who died of glioblastoma in 2006.

She is best known for “The Two-Headed Calf.”

With gratitude to the Poetry Foundation for allowing me to try to restore this remarkable healthcare practitioner/poet’s legacy.

Fraught. Currently changing my pen-grip which has changed my handwriting entirely and identity crisis !
Congrats to all the longlist and shortlistees. I look forward to holding and reading all the poems when the Anthology is published later in the year.
I have shared Diaz’s comments here, along with the poem.

My immense gratitude to Natalie Diaz and to the Plaza Prize for the encouragement of this — and for all you do for poetry.

If you haven’t read Diaz’s ‘Postcolonial Love Poem’ or ‘My Brother Was An Aztec’ I recommend them to you highly!
