Next fall's grad seminar will fall under "Narrative Theory" (we haven't taught it in forever; if we don't, we lose the number). Two wolves: an idiomatic triad of choice, control, and violence or a Back to the Roots of cultural expressionism: Leo Marx, Kracauer (Nietzsche!), Moten, etc. Thoughts?
I am not going to say Kaczynski had a point. You can’t make me.

Gelertner’s defense is that he was just a pimp. “You keep the boss’s potential habits in mind”
Yale prof David Gelernter defends his letter urging Epstein to hire "v small goodlooking blonde" student by saying that he was "keep[ing] the potential boss's habits in mind."

This creep shouldn't be allowed anywhere near students.

Would love newspapers to return to the spiteful days of years gone by. A whole daily section on Bezos's Bozos. Pix that them look horrible. The Ghost of Robin Givhan ridiculing their stupid suits. The maniacal alt-weekly metro reporters who camped out a council meetings and had all the dirt.
Mackenzie Scott should buy the Washington Post.

Hello, looks like independent publishers should beef up our books coverage.

If you're into the idea of joining the @flaminghydra.com collective and writing a book review each month (800-2000 word range), please send us your ideas and some clips to [email protected]

Often enough, pop song writers come up with one fantastic riff or one fantastic line and not much else. What Lolas "Trick Myself" proposes is that you should just repeat it over and over and then stop.

Netflix is emailing me to watch a 10 year old Rob Reiner/Woody Harrelson movie about LBJ. The key art is singularly useless. The summary is semigrammatical slop. What sins have I committed, O Great Streamer, to deserve this?

When scientists attempt to raise money from private donors do they not have development offices vet them? (Many such cases, etc..)

To plug a $400m hole in the operating budget the USC library stopped buying physical books. At some point "You gotta spend money to raise money," becomes downright perverse. frontofficesports.com/college-athl...

Different philia at work here, my dude
Who knows what the best-available defense to this sort of thing is, @kjhealy.co ? I sure don’t. I'll offer (preaching to choir, I know) that many of us who study networks are perpetually vexed by the concept of homophily and why we end up connected with people like ourselves. (6/8)

Gave it a shot
Just FYI the folks at the Atlantic who brought you "kids can't read books anymore" and "kids get too much time to take tests" are prepping "kids can't even watch movies anymore," another exercise in what is sure to be fundamentally incurious, anecdote-driven, clickbait bad faith.

In memory of the great writer Dan McQuade, I wrote about how we spent about fifteen years sending each other really stupid press release quotes. I'll miss him.
I Was Stoked To Collaborate With Dan McQuade
A couple days ago, I heard the terrible news that the writer Dan McQuade passed away. I’ve read some great tributes to him from people…
