It’s #RevPit day!

The world is on fire, but today the RevPit editors invite you to spend some time honing your craft with us.

Because stories matter. Your story matters.

So. I’m awake and caffeinated and full of querying advice.

And I’m up first with my #10Queries!

Who’s ready?
A logline is essentially a one-line pitch of your story intended to describe the central plot and conflict and includes: protagonist, goal, conflict/antagonist.

Example: A charismatic thief must steal a container of deadly chemicals to stop a corrupt agency from destroying her home.

Ever written yourself into a corner and can’t get out?

You aren’t alone!

This is so common I created a separate service for it. I’ve helped hundreds of writers talk through plot holes, character arc, worldbuilding, and more.

Flat fee of $200. Contact link in bio. I’ll read up to 2500 words.

The blurb is the summary for the back cover/inside jacket to tell the reader what the story is about.

It includes 3 elements:

Hook: what makes your story unique?

MC: Introduce them and tell the most important things about them

Set up main conflict + focus on stakes--don't give away the end!

It’s Small Business Caturday—er, Saturday! My Office Cat/Cat Boss Phil says, “Support Small Businesses.”

I’m now booking for consultations. I’ll read 2500 words of your story and meet with you on Zoom for an hour. Phil’s presence at said consultation is optional. 😉

The first chapter is a miniature model of the whole book. It tells readers what to expect and gets them interested enough to find out for themselves.

When I read those first 10 pages, I look for:

Voice, mood, and tone
Plot
Emotional Connection
Mystery
Orientation
Which character do you start with?
November 26, 2025 at 12:15 PM
When you write a book, it’s a contract between a writer and reader. Always consider whether you’ll have a harmful impact upon your reader through outdated stereotypes or tropes, or unintentional mischaracterizations.

Do your due diligence—research (!!) and get a good (human!) sensitivity reader.

How do you begin and end a scene?

You want to use a "get in late, get out early" philosophy so you're starting as close to the action as you can and the characters are going to connect, and what's happening should still make sense to your reader, but we're not going to end up with lots of set-up.

If you want to make plot and character work together, Lisa Cron's Story Genius is essential reading.

It helps you create a step-by-step blueprint for your story as well as a sense of urgency in each scene, and exercises to help you cut down on the number of revision passes you need.

Struggling through the revision process is completely normal. But you need to start with a PLAN.

Start with the free resources on my website. After that, grab my Reverse Outline workshop (on sale for $27.) It’ll help you get a bird’s-eye view of your story. Website link in bio.

Some of my best clients know a lot about writing, but struggle to apply it to their own work.

I call it 2nd Book Syndrome.

I can talk you through it, as I do with them. I’ll read 2500 words and we’ll Zoom for an hour, discussing your story and how to apply what you know. Flat fee, link in bio.

One of my favorite things to do is talk to writers. It’s no surprise…I got my start by chatting with writers in my indie bookstore.

Book a 1-hour consultation (link in bio) and I’ll read your first 2500 words, meet you on Zoom for 1 hour, and help you get past your stuck points.

Have you hit a “stuck point” in your writing? You’ve done everything you can to fill a plot hole, a character gap, a scene flaw, but it’s still coming up for beta readers and critique partners?

I can help!

A large amount of my business comes from word-of-mouth referrals. As a freelance editor, my business is an important part of who I am—so knowing my feedback clicked for a writer always gives me a huge boost.

It's definitely not easy to go right from writing to revising. It requires a shift--you have to become a reader instead of a writer. If you're a neurodivergent writer, sometimes that can feel impossible--but it's not! I have some resources on my website to help.

NO but honestly. Pitching and querying really are a vastly different creature. (Not to get too cheesy, but that's the focus of my query intensive haha because this is so real)
Thanks! Writing is hard but this pitching business is like a whole other skill set. It will click....any time now.

Hey #MockPit -- a couple things I'm seeing:

1. we don't need the title in the pitch

2. make sure you learn and include the standard genre and age category abbreviations. this doesn't super matter for mockpit but does for pitch events!

Y'all are killing it with the aesthetics

I started #MockPit a literal decade ago on Twitter, when there was still a 140 character limit. Publishing has changed a lot since then, and I discontinued the event a few years ago as a lot of pitch contests started to fold.

I couldn't be more excited that #RevPit is bringing it back.

It's #MockPit day! MockPit is just for practicing your pitch.

The #RevPit editors will be working to make sure everyone* gets feedback.

Feel free to support, like, repost, comment, share thoughts, and make friends!

#FiFRevPit

*if you share 2+, you may only get feedback on 1 pitch
#MockPit #FiFRevpit starts now! Until 8 p.m. ET, post your pitch and get feedback from editors and other participants. Feel free to jump in with advice and praise, too! The more feedback, the better.

ICYMI: I am hosting a querying intensive!

This is geared toward writers who are ready to move past the trenches and into the hands of an agent.

We start November 10th, and I’ve already set up our Discord cohorts.

Whenever I see "say less," it makes me think of the Monty Python nudge nudge wink wink sketch, and I think that is actually exactly how it feels when people learn slang they don't really understand and also "say less" = "say no more" and this is how my brain works
