Indeed. If they really wanted to tackle long term sickness there are practical steps they could take, such as clamping down on the letting of damp accommodation, investing in improving air quality or improving the quality of school meals.

It seems to me that the right has always attracted a certain portion of its support from amongst the ranks of those who are bitter because they can't get laid, and that category probably overlaps significantly with having that sort of dress sense.

Exactly. And it's not about dying on the hill of trans rights - it's about being willing to die on the hill of human rights. That's only difficult to see for people who have failed to notice that trans people are human.
