Depolarization might not mean erasing divides, but β€œrepolarizing” around shared values like democracy, fairness, or anti-corruption.

State security overreaching can backfire. When protestors are injured or killed, it can spur parents and middle classes to turn out. Demands can expand to the point of removing the president.
Alternative scenarios are that repression leads to fear keeping people home, in the most repressive states.

Now add 500 Marines called to LA. This is common escalation of protests worldwide. They may start with a specific grievance like transport price hikes (or immigrant raid here), but if security overreaches, more people come out. Large, peaceful during day; small groups more violent at night. 1/2
We’re seeing an unprecedented militarization of civilian society. With tanks in DC for a parade on the president’s birthday, and the National Guard deployed in Los Angeles, read more about when these actions become an abuse of power:

A civilian coup is in full progress in Turkey. Unless EU acts swiftly and decisively, they will not only be complicit but will also endanger Europe's own long-term security. An autocratic Turkey with transactional relations with EU cannot reliably contribute to European security +

Autocrats emboldened everywhere. Today it is Turkey.
The gravest mistake for the publics of democracies is to think that what is happening in Turkey is about Turkey & its region alone. The deepening global fault line between democracy & autocracy and the battle between democratic & oligarchic/far-right rule is played out in TR but will not stop here.
