Text on a coral background reads: "My research has provided recommendations for how hospital sites can implement the preterm birth pathway at their hospital site to ensure successful implementation.

These recommendations include improving the knowledge of risk factors and the purpose of the preterm surveillance clinic amongst clinicians. Sites should focus on training staff on preterm risk factors and pathology, while undergraduate midwifery courses should aim to integrate this into their teaching.” There is a small photo if Naomi Carlisle.

When patients are not heard by their doctors there can be devastating consequences.

So why does this happen & what can be done to address it?

On the cover, Dr Rageshri Dhairyawan explores this question.

Cover of The Lancet's Feb 15, 2025 issue. Quote on cover reads "At the core of patients not being heard is the unequal power dynamic between doctor and patient. Each holds a different form of expertise...It is vital that we combine this expertise and collaborate."

The IMPART study has been included in an NIHR Alert, highlighting how the study’s recommendations could improve the implementation of the care pathway for early birth risk assessment.

Text on a blue background reads: Researchers identify actions needed to improve care for women at risk of early birth.

The IMPART study by ARC South London maternity researchers recommends these actions to improve care:

- better staff training on early birth and the pathway
- multidisciplinary preterm teams
- women-centered care.
