I don't wear a kebaya or batik for white people. This isn't me "tokenizing" myself with culture. It's just the fabric of my lived history. If that's cringe for you and you'd prefer an asian person to wear a t-shirt instead, that's the assimilation talking. That's your desire to become white default.

I truly can't fathom how deep into the asian diaspora white assimilation game you have to be in to look at another asian person wearing cultural clothing and say "that person's only doing it for the white gaze"

The way they illustrate how the protag shares his newfound advice to the people he met on his journey, what an incredible framing device.

I really love this book

The fisherman who rows the ferry looks upon the solution to his problem proposed by the protagonist

The protagonist tells the farmer how to heal his daughter. He points to a poison stone under her bed.

The wife sleeping in the dragon's bed with him and pricking his feathers to give to the protag under their bed is so much more tense. And it makes more sense than the devil falling asleep in granny's lap where she picks his hairs.

I adore how the artist poses the wife on this page. The attitude.

I love how they streamlined the original tale.

Skipping to the better second half of the story, the change of characters, the way our protag gets info from the dragon's wife instead of the devil's grandma. Also the wife is hot.
