Trying to cryptically express to you, the themes of my next book
From Queer Indonesia Archive digital exhibition about zines: MitraS was a short-lived lesbian publication created in the late 90s made in response to the lack of lesbian publications at the time and as a challenge to the myth that there was no lesbian scene in Indonesia. The magazine is evocative of the loneliness and isolation being faced by many members of the lesbian community due to their double burden of sexism and homophobia within the wider Indonesian community. From Queer Indonesia archive digital exhibition "Queer Jakarta in the 90s an incomplete history": The lack of visibility of the lesbian community in Indonesia, and the the lack of lesbian engagement in the gay mens activist movement became of increasing concern to members of the Kelopok Kerja Lesbian dan Gay Nusantara (The lesbian and gay working group of the archipelago). In 1989, Dede Oetomo, one Indonesia’s leading gay activists, wrote call out to Indonesian lesbians in the magazine Gaya Nusantara – the countries biggest gay publication. The article titled 'Indonesian Lesbians: where are you?’ was a call for engagement from the lesbian community.

I like how I said it on tumblr so here it is again
As we're seeing more mainstream queer media that focuses on joy and escapism, there's been a push-back to stories about suffering and struggle. "The Issue Story vs Incidental Story dichotomy" It's a fair reaction considering trans people are used to seeing exploitive, 1-dimensional stories about their pain be commodified for cis consumption. But to go 180 and completely disregard stories about transness and how it's othered -especially when so many people within the trans community use art to express and connect with others who they hope understand their pain too- I think it's detrimental in the long run to bring that "good vibes only" energy to how diverse queer art can be.
