I’ve gotten a bunch of new followers of late. So hi; I’m a Black
Woman sociolinguistics prof at my alma mater, Univ of Michigan. I skeet social justice, linguistics, productivity, teaching, cats and dogs, and NCAA sportsball.

I contain multitudes.
A friend’s twins (5;9) wrote a play menu and had on the menu “BEct BIns” and I a) read the intended “baked beans” b) realized kids instinctively reach for the “right” pre-shift vowel letter and c) think we should start teaching kids much earlier that sorry, they were born into the weird language.

Whenever this is mentioned, it is obligatory to post xkcd 2381, in which @gretchenmcc.bsky.social shares forbidden linguistic knowledge with the masses.

This is how long we’ve been in this building.

Grabbed a couple for the next time I have to teach sign = signifier + signified

I really wish @darrylcomedy.bsky.social would someday stop being relevant but here we are.

Things I hate relearning:

1. I can indeed get a lot written in an hour
2. You do improve at your instumwnt if you practice
3. Planning the day does result in a smoother day.

I have just returned to bonnie Glasgow following a truly incredible week @umich.edu for @nwavconference.bsky.social 53. It was wonderful to see such a diverse range of research happening across the Atlantic and beyond, as well as the very moving plenary from some of the most inspirational (1)

JEROME!!!
Megyn Kelly who angrily insisted Santa is white on air, and added...so was Jesus

Because someone wrote a book that had a Black Santa.

meanwhile as a kid, when I believed in Santa, I recall being specifically told more than once that Santa was all races. That's why of course there are Black Santas

I have developed a cold but I am back to feeling reasonably rested *and* my inbox is 100% processed and my grading is up to date in the wake of NWAV and it's Tuesday at 3PM.

Writing advice of the day:

The introduction is "this is why this question matters."
The conclusion is "this is why my results matter."

Got a Q from a student and now I'm curious: has anyone looked at preposition stacking as a feature of AAL? e.g. "You need to get up on out of that seat" "We will be up in here" etc. #linguistics #aave

I can't take credit for this, it's a comment on @npr.org 's FB post about the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald (the song and the wreck), but as a Michigan linguist I died laughing:

"It's actually pronounced 'gichi-gami,' but nothing bad happens when the skies in November turn balmy."

Can I just say...I cancelled lecture and discussion this week because I and my GSIs were going to be busy with NWAV, but let students recover the attendance points as extra credit by showing up and selfie-ing at #NWAV53 and these photos are all kinds of delightful.

Just went to clear this week’s reading in Perusall ahead of NWAV.

Past Jessi did not assign any reading so that today Jessi can just focus on NWAV.

Past Jessi is the real MVP; love that chick. She also put dinner in the crockpot and scheduled the housekeeper to come Thursday.

While I always hope that every election draws in *some* new voters, it is hilarious to me the way people very seriously explain how to fill out my ballot. I can't imagine that there are tons of people coming out for the very first time just to vote on a new millage. Yeah, I know how to bubble it in.
