I’ve gotten a bunch of new followers of late. So hi; I’m a Black
Woman sociolinguistics prof at my alma mater, Univ of Michigan. I skeet social justice, linguistics, productivity, teaching, cats and dogs, and NCAA sportsball.

I contain multitudes.

Little sprinkles in my day right now are when I search for someone in my inbox and their NWAV registration (which is otherwise auto-hidden) pops up and then I know I am going to see them soon!

NWAV registration is ongoing! nwav53.ling.lsa.umich.edu. See you in Ann Arbor!

Writing a dissertation shouldn't be miserable and painful. If it is, seek support.

But writing a dissertation shouldn't be a cakewalk, either. It should feel challenging and at times it will feel insurmountable.

The latter isn't the former.

This message is for both students and advisors.

Somebody tried to troll here and went viral asking if anybody ever bought a book because they saw it on BlueSky and I am still struck every time I go “Wow the speed with which I switched tabs and bought that book!” after somebody tells me about one…

Thank you! #booksky #mybudgettho

I am in my "Board of Directors" era and I am SO BUSY but I was made for this kind of work and I absolutely love it. I was born to make organizations run.

Just having a moment reflecting on what a ridiculous state we're in, where the president is making "deals" with private universities by personally meddling in federally allocated education and research funding and this is being treated as just ordinary politics.

If Harvard bows down to this lawless president, it will cover itself in shame and betray its motto “Veritas.”

Don’t pretend to stand for truth if you’re going to surrender to this bully. Appeasement only feeds the beast and puts us all at greater risk.

This is only compounded by the fact that pretty much all speech and visual “AI” systems dramatically underperform for minoritized populations due to smaller training data, poor model assumptions, and the fact that tech companies DGAF about black people.

cops are 1,000,000% going to use AI-generated "security footage" to coerce Black kids into confessing to things they didn't do because fighting it will seem absolutely hopeless.

Shoutout to every stupid MFer embracing & glazing AI but specifically Black people because this kind of technology is absolutely horrifying for us

This format is incredibly helpful for reframing debates. It's also pragmatics 101. Negation only operates on the "comment"/focused part of an utterance. If you introduce a presupposition, negation will not be able to eliminate it.
Example:
A: Have you stopped stealing office supplies?
B: Yes/No?

[white [student athlete] jerseys] not [[white student athlete] jerseys]

But picking a jersey from a Black player would’ve helped here, M Den!!
An advertisement for “white student athlete jerseys” which shows three white colored University of Michigan football jerseys: one with the number 19, one with the number 96 and the name Zvada, and one with the number 44 and the name Bredeson

Siren’s Song by Elizabeth Salo. An interesting witchy romance that does a good job setting up the series to come. While the plot was a little confusing in places, a fun twist at the end makes the next book a want-to-read.
A blue Kindle on a black table with the cover of sirens song by Elizabeth Salo visible. The cover has a four part Celtic knot on the front.

Dufour: “Hegseth thinks this is cool”
My tumblr-addicted ass: “More interesting is the fact that neither Dufour nor Hegseth understand the pragmatics of ‘cool story, bro.’”
Nested tweets. Innermost from Gen. Ben Hodges. “ July 1935 German generals were called to a surprise assembly in Berlin and informed that their previous oath to the Weimar constitution was void and that they would be required to swear a personal oath to the Führer. Most generals took the new oath to keep their positions.”

Quote tweet by Pete Hegseth: “ cool story, general.”

Quote Tweet by Anna Dufour: What is the cool story? When the German army relinquished its allegiance to the constitution to swear instead an oath to the pure the supreme leader, Adolf Hitler Should a man with the fate of the biggest army in the world, think, worse, write “it’s cool”
