Time to cut in #Skystorians, we've got an #AMA with Dr. Amanda Madden, author of Civil Blood: Vendetta Violence and the Civic Elites in Early Modern Italy! Come ask anything about the history of crime & violence, Renaissance & Early Modern Italy, Digital Humanities, & Ezio Auditore.
Hello! I'm Dr. Amanda Madden, author of Civil Blood: Vendetta Violence and the Civic Elites in Early Modern Italy (Cornell UP, 2025) and an expert on violence in Renaissance and early modern Italy. AMA!
Hello all! I’m Amanda Madden, assistant professor at George Mason University and researcher on violence in Italy, 1450-1700 and author of Civil Blood: Vendetta Violence and the Civic Elites of Early Modern Italy (Cornell UP, 2025), a study of how vendetta, enmity, and factional politics contributed to modern state formation. I'm also working on several articles on violence including the digital project, Mapping and Modeling Violence in Early Modern Italy which is looking at lots of data on violence and we're hoping to release some of our results next spring.

Great question! Does anybody know?
Is there a memorial to the animals who served and were lost in war in America? I find the one in London very moving.

Perhaps? 😁 The '4' (counting historiography rather than 'assessing'): original, Civil War/Reconstruction, '60s, and present?

By my reckoning, there have been four 'American Revolutions' or has 'American history' since 1775 just been one long (self-absorbed) phenomenon? 😁

Thanks to everyone who turned out last night to the Alexandria Historical Society's watch party for the final episode of The American Revolution. Great crowd and questions, moderated by Virginia Public Radio's Michael Pope. Great to have WETA there as well.

Good final episode. Wasn’t sure how they were going to fit all in, but they did. Still, I would’ve liked to have seen the series end with the war itself, and then a gesture towards the future as opposed to going into the constitution. The revolution is fascinating enough in its own right. #hatm

Carleton stonewalling George Washington on the return of enslaved people are some of my favorite letters from the end of the war.

Harry Washington evacuates to Nova Scotia then on to Sierra Leon, where he later uses the language of the American Revolution against the British. #HATM

Admiral Rodney’s victory in the Caribbean gave George III hope that the war could carry on. Lord Shelburne has the honor of convincing the king that they could accept American independence, but the British could control the states through trade. Which they do to a large degree. #HATM

Rochambeau is such a seasoned commander and a savvy political general. He puts all the pieces in place whitely that finally convinces Washington to turn south instead of striking New York. Always loved how he presents GW with a map that shows how hitting NY might prove fatal #HATM
