I like bug brains and am always looking for new ways to visualize how awesome they are.
Here I had a major/soldier of a captive Atta ant colony (leaf cutters). Made a window and removed a *lot* of muscle tissue to expose the brain. Fixed and kept in ethanol afterwards. Stitched and stacked later.

Veel sociale wespen die je nu ziet vliegen, hebben opvallend lange antennen: dat zijn mannen. Zij worden alleen in deze tijd geproduceerd omdat de koninginnen van volgend jaar iets nodig hebben om mee te paren. Ze hebben geen angel en kunnen dus niet steken; kun je gewoon pakken. #ElkeDagEenInsect

This edition adds the only known genus of SOCIAL PARASITOIDS, introduced to me by @napoleonicento.bsky.social!

Adult female Sclerodermus wasps cooperate to subdue beetle larvae much larger than themselves. They are often found in wooden furniture.

A photo of a nearly microscopic wingless wasp, taken by my friend Lyn Roueche. The wasp is very ant-like in appearance, though it is not at all closely related to true ants. It has a square-shaped head, a long thorax, and a very large teardrop-shaped abdomen. The plates of the abdomen have a scalloped appearance. The wasp is colored like smoldering embers in a fire.

After many hours of grinding and polishing, finally a complete worker ant ready for patination, assembly, and final polish 🛠️ She looks exhausted too 😅

About a dozen pieces of a worker ant made out of bronze laid out in a somewhat precious way on a wooden table top. The pieces are clean and quite shiny. Many of them have holes where bolts and nuts will go.
