7-year-old-me and older sibling of mine found MAME32 and discovered this game on the family pc.
I learned that my mother loved this game in her early 20s and would play it at the arcade with her friend. It was cool to know that she got MAME32 just to re-experience it.

I'm invoking what little clout I have as a prominent uploader and fan of Sega Genesis/Mega Drive music to call upon the community to stop this already. This technically naive bit of misinformation has been bouncing around for decades at this point. (see alt text)

VGMPF article about GEMS, concluding with the line "GEMS was heavily criticized by video game music listeners because of its low fidelity in instrument design, and many cited SMPS as the superior player." When anyone talks about GEMS, this anti-fact always gets shoehorned in somewhere, seemingly out of deference to people that were personally offended by the Sonic Spinball options music.

Nothing about GEMS as software or driver has anything to do with the perceived quality of audio reproduction, outside of PCM playback quality (which GEMS does quite well!). There are other factors related to the "GEMS sound" but it has more to do with the fact that the software came with a preset library and the driver was used in 200+ games. No matter what "driver" is used in a Genesis game, it's all going through the same FM chip. This is akin to saying DirectX gives you better graphics than Vulkan when it's your GPU doing all the work.

If we are going to get into technical qualities (and I think this is kind of silly for a driver that does sequencer playback on fixed hardware), GEMS is "superior" to SMPS because the stream format is more flexible. But as anyone with ears knows, that doesn't really matter that much.

GEMS was designed to be usable by musicians that understood MIDI, to lower the barrier of entry for Western developers and should honestly be celebrated; I can't imagine how many games would have sounded worse if it hadn't existed!
