Dr. Jane Goodall filmed an interview with Netflix in March 2025 that she understood would only be released after her death.

Short film by @brentpollution.bsky.social showing how nature miraculously survives amidst the despoilment of the River Brent.
Both enraging and uplifting!

I hope students will learn the difference between domestic animals (e.g., honey bees) and wild animals.

I hope the Nobel Prize committee is taking note. Looks like that's another in the bag, in addition to his certain awards for Peace, Economics and Literature.

They must really hate this country to leave that mess.

It's currently the worst of both worlds. In the UK system, we are supposed to be voting for people to represent us. Even this is not allowed because the party whips prevent our elected representatives from voting freely.

My phone read out the message. The Welsh bit at the end came out as gibberish - I think.

Not a teacher, but our daughter is a GCSE student. She made me follow you because she's a big fan of all things Six Idiots.

My mother went to secondary school in Wigton, where Melvyn Bragg was the head boy. She had an autograph book, and got people from school to sign it. His entry was

Never B#,
Never B♭,
Always B♮.

Does anyone have a handle on how much of the financial problems of the NHS can be attributed to PFI payments?

The Jennings brewery in Cockermouth is up and running again as an independent family-owned brewery, and is worth a visit. This is the view from the beer garden at the back, where you can see serious flood damage to one of the buildings near the bridge.
View from behind the Jennings brewery in Cockermouth, Cumbria. A good place to look out for the occasional kingfisher.

A holiday pic from last week. We did a family walk around Ennerdale, which was lovely. It's one of the few lakes without a main road running along it, which adds to the tranquility. It is also home to a project to replace spruce trees with native species.
View over Ennerdale Water in the west of the Lake district.

Small Heath (Coenonympha pamphilus) on Hoary Mustard Small Spotty-eyed Drone Fly (Eristalinus sepulchralis) on Hoary Mustard. Brown Argus (Aricia agestis), a bit late for this Common Knapweed. Blue Mason Bee (Osmia caerulescens - I think) on Black Horehound.

Currently in France and was woken this morning by a Golden Oriole singing from a nearby tree. Shortly afterwards, it was joined by hundreds of Starlings.

I'm no expert, but the "sperm whale" illustration doesn't seem to be a sperm whale.

They do seem to like knapweed. Here's one I saw yesterday.
