Judee Sill died in virtual solitude 46 years ago today, November 23 1979. Her songs have the power to make us feel we are never alone. She was a complete one-off.

My son is sixteen. Today I asked him to identify five albums he really loves. These are the five he picked:
Grace - Jeff Buckley
Heavy Metal - Cameron Winter
Songs of Leonard Cohen
Young Gifted & Black - Aretha Franklin
Getting Killed - Geese

He’s definitely doing better than I was at his age.

One of the greatest singles ever made. It has it all - sweeping strings, tragic sentiment (‘Little girl, please don’t wait for me…wait patiently for love’) and glorious refrain (‘I’m just a fool…’). An album track until Tony Blackburn hammered it on Radio 1, taking it to the top of the charts. Gold.
