I was listening to @johnnyrestall.bsky.social’s podcast with @fatscoleman.bsky.social on it yesterday and they made a great point about how the genre differences between MANHUNTER and SILENCE OF THE LAMBS are communicated through the mis-en-scene of the scenes of Lecktor/Lecter’s cell.

This was my introduction to the podcast, and I was honestly bowled over by the perceptive and incisive discussion. It’s one of the best film criticism shows I’ve ever heard. And I don’t say that just because we’re 100% in accord re: the demon puppet, right down to the words we use to describe it. 😏

40 years ago today, William Friedkin's TO LIVE AND DIE IN L.A. was released in the USA - a thrilling but withering takedown of sociopathic machismo on both sides of the law.

As Sherlock-Holmes-vs-Jack-The-Ripper film A STUDY IN TERROR (1965) was released 60 years ago this month, here's my piece for Rue Morgue comparing & contrasting it with Bob Clark's similarly-themed MURDER BY DECREE (1979):
