Writing and thinking, often in that order. I write books, draw/paint pictures and take photos. It's about time I put a stop to it. See my latest work at jonkenna.com

Roddy McDowell transforming into a chimpanzee for Planet of the Apes (1967). I loved those old Apes films. I enjoyed the more recent ones too. The CGI is amazing but give me a latex mask any day (there's something I didn't think I'd ever say on the Internet)

Summer always seems slow in coming, this time of year. Hard to even imagine sitting out in the sun. To remind you, here's my sketch of two ladies doing just that

Watched this documentary about a bookstore tonight. Loved that it tells a story the way books do; no need for incident after incident. Emphasis here is on the internal rather than the external (we rarely even glimpse the world outside the shop front), just as in a book.

A ★★★★ review of Hello, Bookstore (2021)
Warm and soothing doc which has the confidence to stay well back and let the interactions of the bookstore owner and his customers and family tell the story. Those who don't like this often say it lac...

A ★★★½ review of Triumph of the Will (1935)
Can something ugly be filmed in a beautiful way? Here's the evidence. The direction is imaginative, innovative and groundbreaking for the time. Editing choices are daring and effective. It's all a lie...

Politicians still do this irritating thumb-based pointing, 3 decades after Tony Blair invented it. Enough is enough

5 years ago this week I fell off a skateboard & broke my tibia and fibula. Metal rod inserted into the bone and screws in my ankle. Pain battered the hell out of me for months. I was at rock bottom physically and emotionally. Half a decade later I hardly ever even think about it.

A ★★★★ review of Downfall (2004)
Forensic examination of the last days of Hitler, the direction feels invisible but is devastatingly effective. Sparing use of music or melodrama makes this feel very real. The performances are great a...
