Covering #MNUFC for the Minnesota Star Tribune (but contractually obligated to not indicate nor imply that I'm an employee, or staff member, at same). Can't shut up about Minnesota sports, but still always Minnesota nice. Also still a crackpot.
“The squad will need to improve.”

#MNUFC had another decent season, but they’re yet to become the finished product. Whether 2025 is another step forward for the club depends on what comes next. Final story from San Diego:

Quotes added to the #MNUFC game story. "It didn’t feel like we were going to be done with our season today," said midfielder Wil Trapp.

Absolutely loved the atmosphere in San Diego. I recommend putting it on your #MNUFC road trip list for April 2026

Nectarios Triantis was so good for #MNUFC down the stretch - I kind of wonder whether we'll actually see him in a Loons uniform again, or if he'll be back in the Premier League in January.

Other summer signings weren't so effective. Dominik Fitz played 8 min in the playoffs, Mamadou Dieng 0.

Kelvin Yeboah led #MNUFC with 13 goals in all competitions this season, but he also closed the year on a streak of 13 appearances without a goal.

Initial game story: #MNUFC played the game it wanted to play - but that's not the same thing as winning the game.

FINAL: #SDFC 1, #MNUFC 0.

Sometimes, one chance is all you need. The Loons held San Diego to one shot on target, but Anders Dreyer scored from it, and Minnesota's season ends at Snapdragon Stadium.

how appropriate would it be if the Loons got an equalizer from a long throw

Dotson and Fitz on for Trapp and Harvey for #MNUFC
November 25, 2025 at 4:56 AM
Looks like Hassani Dotson and Dominik Fitz are getting ready for #MNUFC
November 25, 2025 at 4:53 AM
There's the moment for #SDFC! Corey Baird gets to the byline and hoofs the ball back into the penalty area, a moment of hesitation from the #MNUFC defense, and Anders Dreyer blasts a shot into the top of the net.

San Diego leads 1-0 and the Loons need to find yet another comeback...

It's the age-old question... San Diego has had like 80 percent of the possession, but #MNUFC has had four shots on target and has spaces to attack on the counter, while #SDFC has had no shots and no space.

So who is really controlling this game?

Ian Pilcher robs Robin Lod with a sliding save that might be the play of the damn year #MNUFC
November 25, 2025 at 4:29 AM
Robin Lod sends Kelvin Yeboah through on goal, but Yeboah's first touch is a little loose and Sisniega rushes out to take the ball off his toes.

Oh, that could have been the moment for #MNUFC...

60 minutes. No shots on target for San Diego. We're getting into the "who changes the game with a sub and when" territory

#MNUFC goes long, wins a second ball, and Robin Lod is off to the races. Cuts inside, beats Sisniega in the SD goal, but the shot is cleared off the line! Amazing play by the SD defense... and, offensively speaking, pretty much exactly what the Loons will want to do in the second half

HALFTIME: #SDFC 0, #MNUFC 0.

A physical, in one case bloody first half, but nothing to separate the two teams. San Diego still without a shot on target, which means this is going according to plan for the Loons.
November 25, 2025 at 4:03 AM
Two shots on goal in this half, and they're both for #MNUFC from open play. Like we all predicted really

It makes me laugh watching Anthony Markanich try to nonchalantly walk up late for a corner kick, as if he's hoping nobody will notice him. (Onni Valakari is following him everywhere at corners.)

Manu Duah and Kelvin Yeboah clash and both are down. Looks like they both accidentally punched each other in the mouth on the play. No foul called either way, which, you know, fair enough

A half-hour gone and #SDFC has just three shot attempts, all of which were blocked and didn't reach Dayne St. Clair.

I have to think that #MNUFC would have, as Eric Ramsay says, "snapped your hand off" for a start like that
November 25, 2025 at 3:43 AM
Yelling at the referee seems to be a big part of San Diego's offensive game plan
November 25, 2025 at 3:40 AM
The San Diego crowd has picked up where Seattle's left off and is booing #MNUFC keeper Dayne St. Clair mightily for being less than prompt on restarts.

I wonder if they realize that they're only encouraging him.
November 25, 2025 at 3:37 AM
Kelvin Yeboah now goes into the book - loose touch on an attempted counter, then plowed right through Manu Duah attempting to get it back.

#MNUFC has two yellows in the first 20 minutes, what can go wrong there?
November 25, 2025 at 3:33 AM
Hlongwane wins a free kick, Joaquín Pereyra goes over everybody for Anthony Markanich on the side of the penalty area. Markanich heads it back perfectly for Robin Lod to shoot from the penalty spot, but Lod's shot cannons off Michael Boxall and out for a goal kick.

Almost got it right...
