I made an AI system from scratch in Unity for Midnight Blood Rush a few years ago. It was a kind of mix between Behaviour Trees and State Machines, in a tree like structure. I called it State Trees.
Since 5.4, Unreal Engine has a new AI system, called... State Trees. And it works like my system !
