A footnote to the Copernican revolution:
What a profound epistemic rupture it was, wasn’t it, for the Earth to be demoted to the status of a planet?
We are no longer at the center of the universe — just an ordinary planet, inhabited by ordinary people.

Here’s what I had to say over on Instagram (@thisguysucked) about the Nottoway Plantation house fire.
The Nottoway Plantation, the US largest remaining antebellum mansion, burned to the ground yesterday. My official serious historian opinion is I don’t care and also good riddance. This plantation that once had 155 enslaved people on its grounds was functioning as a 4-star hotel where you could have weddings and proms and $200 per night sleepovers. This was not a place that remotely cared about the horrors of slavery or about brining historical justice to its victims. The history section of their website doesn’t even MENTION slavery. It does, however, have a list of all the nicknames they’ve given their trees. Basically, as someone whose job it is to think about, talk about, and teach history: if you care more about a plantation house burning down than you do about the people whose freedom was stolen there, you don’t actually care about what makes history important and why we study it. Also this probably ain’t the podcast for you.

Since apparently we're doing this *again*:

1. An education in the humanities is good and lots of people should have one.

2. If you think that an education in the humanities is the only way to learn critical thinking then your education in the humanities has not taught you much critical thinking.

In 2021, on the other place, I shared a backlog of odd but possible research ideas.

It was a good experience. Plenty of helpful comments, thoughts and feedback.

For reasons I'll explain I am going back through them, especially the more 'experimental' ones. I thought I'd share them again here.
