Hey I did a UK masters and PhD (at Edinburgh to boot, which is catching strays here) and I have bad news about how many actually finish in 4!
Really important to understand that British PhDs and American PhDs are not the same. In the UK, a PhD program is generally a straight-to-research program that takes around 3-4 years to complete. In the US, PhD students usually take 2-3 years of coursework before they begin the dissertation proces

I wrote this piece in 2020--but given ICE's use of face recognition and Pam Bondi posting mugshots on X, I'll share that since the 1890s, there has been concerns about the constitutionality of mugshots taken before conviction. Police retaining your photo erodes your presumption of innocence.

This is terrible. It is also an opportunity for certain journalists to finally speak up with a *fraction* of the courage the people of Minneapolis have shown. It is also instructive that Lemon is Black. Woe/pox etc upon white journalists who don’t freak out about this.

Just remembered when our local mail truck got robbed last year and they stole all our ballots and we only found out because our neighbor was literally on the ballot to become mayor and hers didn’t get delivered. The bay area is a wild-ass place.

I want to say a bit more about our initiative to hire scholars to 3yr Research Associate positions.
None of us know what the twinning of humanities research support and employment will look like in another 5(?) years. But we do know that we need it. As a matter of social and cultural health. 1/
