Zombie or ICE Agent?

✔️Bashes down your front door.
✔️Yanks you out of your car.
✔️Makes it difficult to go outdoors.
✔️Rips apart families.
✔️Feels like the end of the world.

The only differences appear to be that zombies aren’t racist and won’t 🍇 you once you’re in their grasp.

I’m excited to be included in this upcoming anthology!

Is horror your comfort genre? Do you enjoy short stories?

If you answered “Yes!” the you should check out “When the Ghosts Come Tumbling In.” You can find it in @rottingleafmag.bsky.social.

In case you missed it, our January piece of short ecofiction was “When the Ghosts Come Tumbling In”, by @jsdouglas.bsky.social. And it’s a weird one (complimentary)

I wrote this essay about writing eco fiction. I hope it’s an interesting read! 📚
“When I write in the eco horror corner of the vast ecofiction genre, I try to strip the natural world of human motivation.”

In “When the Ghosts Come Tumbling In” @jsdouglas.bsky.social takes us on a strange, beautiful, tumbling journey 👇
"Like so many others, this tumbleweed is released from its anchoring root, the wind flinging it into the air. It lands on a grasshopper mouse, trapping it and killing it with sharp thorns and percussive bouncing."

Is writing a poem easier or harder than writing a short story? I am obsessively editing and re-editing a poem to submit to an open call and I’m finding so many opportunities to second guess myself. I think sometimes having more words to work with makes things easier.

👻 Women In Horror 🦷

March is the perfect time to celebrate the incredible women shaping horror! Two years ago, my shelves seriously lacked women authors. Now, thanks to the book community, that’s changed.

See any favorites? #WomenInHorror #HorrorBooks

Also, my very rude dog tried to devour “Out There Screaming.” Fortunately, he just gnawed on the corner of the book so I can still read it. It’s soooo good so far!

I live next to a privately owned train track, so it’s always a fun surprise when the train comes. Could come at 8:30 AM on a Thursday, might be 10 AM on a Sunday. Might just be the guy who owns it transporting his jeep up and down the track for some reason.

My ideal reader for my WIP is someone who loves a mix of fantastical and real life horror. And potentially the kind of person who is interested in reading about and dissecting cults.

Let's talk marketing for a bit.

So often we'd love our books to appeal to everyone, but they say it's better to write with a certain audience in mind.

Today on #pretendpanel, I'm asking...

January 23rd: Who do you see as your ideal reader?

Someone who hasn’t spoken to me in 3 years just messaged me to ask “how do you splice a few things together?”
Is this the beginning of a horror movie or does she want to learn photoshop? I am only educated in one of those things. Stay tuned.

There’s something so weird about being a writer. You are confident that your story must be told while fighting imposter syndrome. Also, nothing you write will ever be good enough so you keep doing it, spilling out story after story until one day, you look back and realize that you became an author.

I need to squeeze in some writing time today. I have a huge work project and 10,000 story ideas swirling in my head.
