Also, unlike previous parties that vanished once the territorial issue regained prominence (i.e., Plataforma per Catalunya), the distinct national appeals of both Vox and Aliança may allow them to endure even if the independence debate once again dominates Catalan politics.

This is an early study, so all usual caveats apply. We will gain a clearer picture of the party and its voters in the coming months, particularly as new elections are held. Nonetheless, we expect the party to remain relevant as long as immigration stays high on the public agenda.

Our findings show that disenchanted independentists do not drive Aliança’s growth. When we examine the former voters of mainstream Catalan parties, those who switch are primarily concerned about immigration, rather than independence.

What is the key driver of support for both? Immigration.
But it’s national identity — whether one feels more Catalan or more Spanish — that decides which radical right party voters choose.

Catalonia is a unique case in Europe, with two radical right parties appealing to different nationalities. Both parties share views on the economy, immigration, and security. But they diverge on gender & LGBT rights, climate change, and especially, the territorial question.
