They were promised a lifeline to 'graduate' from poverty. Then it was taken away
Thousands of South Sudanese refugees and impoverished locals in Uganda saw a brighter future with a new USAID-funded project. They'd get $205 and coaching to build a business. Then came the cuts.

What I love about this story is that the pastor went to a workshop, learned about sensory rooms for the first time, and asked an expert parishioner to lead the charge to build one. This is ministry! www.americamagazine.org/faith/2025/0...

For Christians this way of thinking & acting is unacceptable, since it sets certain political preferences above deep convictions of our faith: the inalienable dignity of each human person regardless of origin, race or religion & the supreme law of fraternal love (PopeFrancis. Fratelli Tutti, no. 39)
No one will ever openly deny that [migrants] are human beings, yet in practice, by our decisions and the way we treat them, we can show that we consider them less worthy, less important, less human. (Pope Francis, Fratelli tutti, no. 39)

Our own days, however, seem to be showing signs of a certain regression. Ancient conflicts thought long buried are breaking out anew, while instances of a myopic, extremist, resentful and aggressive nationalism are on the rise. (Pope Francis, Fratelli tutti, no. 11)

Happy Easter! One option for today's readings is Colossians 3:1-4. It reminds us that #Easter is not simply "turning the page" but helps us embrace the meaning of Christ's suffering and death in the light of his resurrection. I reflected on this passage in my book on baptism.
