I very excited we finally made a new version of #smudgeplot: Skylight. Much faster, improved inference and interface and finally, we have a new experimental features that might be fun toying with.

final week to apply for @sangerinstitute.bsky.social PhD programme (due Nov 27th) -- free to apply, open to anyone anywhere, and a superb training opportunity for students interested in genomic approaches applied to biodiversity, pathogens, vectors, and of course us pesky humans.

Does anyone have a photo of Charles W. Metz by any chance? He originally isolated the Holo2 line of Bradysia coprophila we still use after more than 100 years after their original capture.

This, except I think we can take leadership in our hands, we don’t need funders to do it for us…

All of us can avoid publishing and reviewing for for-profits and it does not have to be too much of a sacrifice (plenty of flashy society/nonprofit journals out there). Be the change.
Fundamentally, what we need is leadership. But we break with the chorus of most #OpenScience initiatives here and emphasize very strongly that this leadership must come from funders and institutions.

We researchers can support the battle, but we cannot lead the charge. Funders hold the cards.

new publication by @amjadkhalaf.bsky.social who mined arthropod reference genome data for hidden microsporidia reads and then did a whole lot of assembling and sleuthing! great job @amjadkhalaf.bsky.social !
Really, really happy that our work on microsporidian genomes is now out in @plosbiology.org! A huge thank you to my coauthors, my supervisors @mblaxter.bsky.social & @marakat.bsky.social, the editors @roliroberts.bsky.social & Joseph Heitman, and the reviewers ❤️ plos.io/48HsAQJ

This is a really interesting story. Microsporidia have genome architecture as no other creatures! Congrats @amjadkhalaf.bsky.social

We have a new small GenomeScope based on @jgrg.mstdn.science.ap.brid.gy's pull request. Thanks James!

Main new feature --json_report will generate a json formatted list of all the inputs and outputs which will make automatic processing of genomescope results easier.

This is getting a bit awkward. Anyone else feels like chipping in?
Of course it helps. I confess that I don’t understand the logic that society journals with nonprofit publishers should have less right to recoup our costs than corporate publishers have to do so *and* take a cut in profit (which often takes the form of burdensome APCs)...

How many chromosomes can an animal have?

In our paper out now in @currentbiology.bsky.social we show that the Atlas blue butterfly has 229 chromosome pairs- the highest in diploid Metazoa! These arose by rapid autosome fragmentation while sex chromosomes stayed intact.

Rather interesting thread, I always wondered why we don’t peer review preprints more.
Why hasn't Preprint Peer Review caught on more?

I discovered a small, but simple reason - authors are missing out on the JOY of getting feedback because they aren't notified when feedback occurs.
