There's a bit in Superman where he takes a brief moment in a battle to save a squirrel and I love that kind of shit.

READ. THIS. BOOK. Everything you know or suspect about one of the most influential media companies confirmed. I teach these issues, already know this stuff, and I was still shocked by what I read. I can't stop thinking about @carelesspeople.bsky.social

Here's the difference a little under two weeks makes! They've gone through a couple molt sessions (probably going from second to fourth instar--there's usually five in total).

THEY'RE HERE!

This morning, I told A I saw a bunch of monarch eggs on a baby common milkweed. He didn't believe me..."They're not here yet." "Bet ya I'm right!" I said. And guess who was right?!

Trimming back plants in the garden always makes me paranoid. Gotta watch out for our butterflies' friends. This is Todd the Toad.

The Monarch #butterfly embarks on one of nature's most incredible journeys, migrating up to 3,000 miles from #Canada to central #Mexico. These tiny travelers, with wings of vibrant orange, navigate the vast distances using the sun and Earth’s magnetic fields, defying the odds

It's been a while... I've been (kinda) patiently preparing the garden. Today I thought I'd celebrate with this necklace I got years ago--somewhere, in Indiana. No, the wings used for the jewelry were not harvested from live butterflies. If you know who might have made this piece, please let me know!

This was one of the last butterflies of the season.

One of the easiest ways to tell males and females apart is the pheromone sacs males have on their wings. Usually, they look like two black dots, but you can really see the detail here.

Many factors to consider regarding the already declining numbers of Monarchs. With the fires in CA having destroyed forests where some overwinter, and (maybe?) talk of federal policy that could help increase numbers--I'm not sure with this administration though--there's more we need to do.

A beautiful book. I thought it couldn't possibly beat The Lost Bookshop. I was wrong.

When we entered the area where the Monarchs overwintered, I told my husband to "look at the butterflies all over the trees!" About ten minutes later, and after the guides gave us binoculars to see them better, he excitedly said, "Those are butterflies!" I guess he didn't believe me...

This was one of the most amazing experiences I've had. We went to see the Monarchs overwintering in Mexico last month. Locals care deeply for these butterflies and their environment. They told us that this was nothing like what it was only ten or so years earlier when numbers were so much higher.
