The huge sarsen stones guarding the entrance to West Kennet Long Barrow, with a glimpse of Silbury Hill beyond. Pic from a couple of years ago. #StandingStoneSunday
Several tall upright stones in front of the grassy mound of the long barrow. Behind the sun is setting so the sky is turning pink. On the right, in the background the unmistakable shape of Silbury Hill is visible.

If a standing stone can project an "I'm obnoxious" vibe (I'm being polite here) - it's this one! #StandingStoneSunday

The Dol de Bretagne, which, legend has it, appeared in the height of a battle where two brothers met and fought, when it rose up between and separated them. There does seem to have been a battle near here in 560 CE between father and son. #StandingStoneSunday #Folklore #Bretagne #Breizh #Brittany
A large 9 metre high menhir dominates a mown grassy field. The sky is a cloudless blue with some hints of vapour trails, echoed by desire lines in the grass leading up to the menhir. The only other features are a small fence in the background and a few trees and hedges on the skyline.

The southern row of Les Alignements du Moulin, Sainte-Just in Brittany. Great place to visit - this stone row just one of many megalithic sites on Les Landes de Cojoux. #StandingStoneSunday
A cloudy by blue sky provides a background for several tall standing stones in alignment. The stones are grey in colour.

The Siblyback Moor standing stone on the south-east slope of Newel Tor. #StandingStoneSunday #BodminMoor We walked from Siblyback Lake, although probably not so far if approaching from Kilmar Tor.
A granite standing stone, on a grassy slope, blue sky. View to the north east with Kilmar Tor in the background. View to the south, Stowes Hill is the middle hill in the background.

It's not #StandingStoneSunday unless someone posts a pic of the Rudston Monolith, so here we are. Taken three years ago on a half-term break to visit number 1 son while he was at York uni. He's 24 today so I feel as old as this stone.
The tallest standing stone in Britain, 7.6 metres high stands in a churchyard surrounded by grave stones. The sun is setting turning the sky shades of pink.

Let's go with a #StandingStoneSunday that should really be #TombTuesday. These stones form a kerb of orthostats around a mound with a lovely cist in the centre near Trewortha Farm on Kilmar Tor, Bodmin Moor, taken a few weeks ago on a CAS walk.
Several stones, some around 1m high, stand upright or leaning to create a circular kerb around a cist.

Flying a kite at The Hurlers, pic from 2012. Blurry old photo, and a happy memory. All three will be on their way to their uni's, starting with number 1 (flying the kite) today. By mid-September we will have no children in our house, the first time since 2001. #StandingStoneSunday
Three boys fly a red kite amongst the standing stones of one of The Hurlers circles. The sky is blue, the children are having fun.

Remains of a probable bronze age cist at Colliford Lake in Cornwall, the cist is visible at the moment as the water level is low. #TombTuesday
Colour photograph with bright blue sky. In the distance water shines. Several stones arranged to form the cist with other stones spaced further away, perhaps once part of an outer kerb. View showing a small square shaped cist.

Some of the stones of the partially submerged Er Lannic stone circle, Brittany. Taken on the return trip from Gavrinis. I struggled to get a good pic as I was sat on wrong side of a packed boat. Try again next time! #StandingStoneSunday
Colour photograph take in fading light. The silhouettes of several standing stones just visible about a calm sea and another taller one on a small island. From a different angle, and closer, view of the submerged er Lannic stones. Each one is topped by a gull or cormorant.

The Cairn de l'île Carn for #TombTuesday off the coast of Finistère at Porsguen. This cairn has three chambers, two can be accessed to view the incredible corbelled roof. Well worth a visit - just check the tide times.
View of the cairn, just possible to make our the southern entrance and the central entrance blocked by a sign. Inside the south chamber. The roof is corbelled rather than an arrangement of orthostats and capstones. Look out of the northern chamber which is again created by a stone wall. Sign blocking the entrance to the central chamber reads "NE PAS MONTER SUR LE TUMULUS MERCI ET KENAVO SITE PROTEGE" which translates as "Do not climb the mound. Thank you and farewell. Protected site"

I've posted this #StandingStoneSunday stone before, but yesterday on a walk with CAS it caused a little controversy about whether or not it really was a Bronze Age menhir as described here share.google/h24Jxlk1t0Jx... if the HER record isn't for this stone (?!?) I need to go back and find the match.
A granite stone, rectangularly shaped with a point at one end, leaning towards the south with the outcrop of Kilmar Tor rising up behind.

Hit the point of a holiday where you're not sure entirely what day it is. So thank goodness for day tags, otherwise I would be lost. #TombTuesday pics taken last week at one of my fave places the Mougau Bihan allée couverte, Commana in Brittany.
The sun sets behind the tomb. Two "paddle" engravings. Engraving thought to be of an axe. Picture of info board. Zoom in and use google lens (or alternative) to read the text for more information.

Places like these draw us in time after time. Our own memories linked to these ancient monuments. Why we were there? What we were doing in that stage of our lives? The menhir Men Marz near Brignonan-Plage in Brittany, yesterday but could have been 5 years ago or 15 years ago. #StandingStoneSunday
A tall, 8.50 ish metre, standing stone, topped with a small cross in an attempt to "christianise" it. A second view without the sun glinting.

Gavrinis #TombTuesday taken last week on my first visit since about 2007. Already planning the next trip as there really wasn't enough time to properly appreciate all the engravings. #Neolithic #Brittany
View of the Cairn of Gavrinis from the boat as approaching the island. View from inside of the passage in Gavrinis towards the entrance. On the left the swirling engravings on the stones can be seen. Closer view engraved stones - the swirls may represent the patterns made by the currents in the sea surrounding the island. Stone engraved with axe shaped marks.

I took a 360 pic which won't load onto Bluesky, unfortunately. So here's a not that brilliant video! #StandingStoneSunday

A happy #StandingStoneSunday from me in Brittany this week! The Quadrilatère de Crucuno in Plouharnel, Morbihan. Either an overly creative late-19th century re-ordering of what may have been several rows of stones, or a fairly accurate restoration of cardinal point aligned arrangement of stones.
View entering the Cromlech, walking up a slight slope towards one of the long edges of the rectangle of stones.

Carew Castle, Pembrokeshire, August 1992. It rained lots but didn't put me off. I went back the next summer and it was slightly less wet. #archaeology

It's a #TombTuesday happy birthday for @chrisull.bsky.social at the St.Just megaliths. Later ..... Gavrinis. 🎂
View of Chris taking a photo of the Château Bû tumulus. Closer view of the remains of Château Bû tumulus.

A #MuseumMonday visit which means my boys have got pay-back on the time I took them to a museum dedicated almost entirely to flint and flint tools from a specific area of the Loire region. Today we're at the Naia Museum in Rochefort-en-Terre.

Ha ha! Yes. And I can add a sad shark to be found at West Kennett Avenue, Avebury! 🦈🐬
One of the standing stones at West Kennet avenue, Avebury. It almost seems shark like in its shape, with a sad-shaped mouth

My #StandingStoneSunday contribution is La Pierre Longue near Pluherlin, Morbihan. Most local to the gite I'm at this week. I regret not stopping to photo another we saw - a relocated menhir in someone's garden that had the joyful addition of a squirrel garden ornament on top.
5 metre tall standing stone at the edge of a field, the boundary fence in the foreground. There is and inscription that reads "Lorois préfet 1836", possibly a tribute to a local prefect at that time.

As it’s #BigButterflyCount , here’s a selection of some of the butterflies in and around the Golitha Falls transect. 2025 has already massively eclipsed 2024, and looks to be better than 2023 on my survey numbers. @savebutterflies.bsky.social #Cornwall #Butterflies #NatureSky
Common Blue, wings closed on a section of marsh grass. The outer wings are brown dappled with white ringed black spots and orange petals with nary a hint of blue. Vibrant orange comma on a bramble leaf, with the familiar jagged wings. The brightness suggests possibly a golden morph variant ? Small copper feasting on a large pink head of hemp agrimony, a plant colloquially known as strawberries and cream, which gives a clue to its Eton mess like appearance A close up of a silver lined meadow brown, wings open, with smudges of vivid orange around the characteristic circular black eye mark. The brown colouring hasn’t faded suggesting a recent emerged specimen.

Lanyon Quoit #TombTuesday
Three orthostats support the large capstone of Lanyon Quoit in west Cornwall.

No way! We went about 18 years ago - at the toddler-wrangling stage of our lives. I can't find the photos from then- possibly digital possibly real pictures but no idea where we put them. We're off there next week. Thanks for the heads up.

Three more work days, one day to pack and get car AC fixed, then I'm off to Brittany! This #StandingStoneSunday pic from 2020 of part of the St. Just alignments. Blisteringly hot day on which we celebrated @chrisull.bsky.social 's 50th. It was Covid times, so lucky to have got over there at all.
Colour photo of several tall standing stones set in parched grass against a very blue sky.
