that movie was big enough and iconic enough, that I'm having trouble remembering whether I saw it, or was just very aware of it through media. Like, I could sit down to watch it and won't know if it's a rewatch until I'm a good way in, I suspect

There's a bunch of them I don't need to rewatch, for sure, but they all usually have great moments that stay with me. Some of them have a theme (or find one) but some don't, so there's nothing to hang those moments onto. Whether a few good moments is worth it to the investors is not my problem!

Sometimes it seems like he's fumbling around a bit, and the films get long, but I think that's the way he liked to go about it, and when it works it's fun and doesn't feel overlong. Gosford Park is well over 2 hours but feels tight as a drum. Dr. T and the Women, not so much!

Please remember that the disgust people have over Christopher Columbus is not based on some modern, 21st century “woke” ideology, but rather on contemporaneous accounts of atrocities that make many modern genocides appear quaint in comparison.

Below, are the accounts of Bartlomé de las Casas.
But too many of the slaves died in captivity. And so Columbus, desperate to pay back dividends to those who had in-vested, had to make good his promise to fill the ships with gold. In the province of Cicao on Haiti, where he and his men imagined huge gold fields to exist, they ordered all persons fourteen years or older to collect a certain quantity of gold every three months. When they brought it, they were given copper tokens to hang around their necks. Indians found without a copper token had their hands cut off and bled to death.
The Indians had been given an impossible task. The only gold around was bits of dust garnered from the streams. So they fled, were hunted down with dogs, and were killed. After each six or eight months' work in the mines, which was the time required of each crew to dig enough gold for melting, up to a third of the men died.
While the men were sent many miles away to the mines, the wives remained to work the soil, forced into the excruciating job of digging and making thousands of hills for cassava plants.
Thus husbands and wives were together only once every eight or ten months and when they met they were so exhausted and depressed on both sides... they ceased to pro-create. As for the newly born, they died early because their mothers, overworked and fam-ished, had no milk to nurse them, and for this reason, while I was in Cuba, 7000 children died in three months. Some mothers even drowned their babies from sheer desper-ation.... In this way, husbands died in the mines, wives died at work, and children died from lack of milk ... and in a short time this land which was so great, so powerful and fer-tile... was depopulated... My eyes have seen these acts so foreign to human nature, and now I tremble as I write....

I wrote about why the regrettable conclusions of Ezra Klein pissed me off so badly in the last couple weeks.

On moral cowardice in an era that calls for clarity, and a popular political instinct to try to solve divisions of abuse by ignoring causes. www.the-reframe.com/eventually-y...

Normally I'd guess that he feels irrelevant and wants to see younger directors marginalized also, but in this case it makes no sense, coming off Fury Road, a huge hit, loved by both critics and fans. He's a hero. So I dunno. But my guess is he realizes halfway through that it's incredibly boring

The war in Gaza ended 6 to 9 months ago. It’s been pure genocide—a straight-up slaughter-and-starvation campaign—since then. Under no circumstances should anyone pretend that Netanyahu is still fighting a “war” just so that Trump can get a photo op and say he “ended” it.

Do better, corporate media.

Trump’s Gaza peace plan does not resolve all the issues, @yair-rosenberg.bsky.social argues. "But Trump is counting on the force of his personality, the exhaustion of the parties, and the momentum created by the initial agreement to ultimately end the war entirely."
The Gaza War Isn’t Over Yet. But It Could Be Soon.
Trump may have ended the Gaza hostage crisis. Can he end the Gaza war?
