For all of the grief it caused us, for all of its lame jokes, and moments that make me cringe to rewatch, Solved! was the best thing that ever happened to me.
That said.
I will never return to that place. I will never play that role again. Not for all the money in the world.
When they ask me, (they never don’t ask me), I explain that the show ended in a good place, and that it seems wrong to ruin our beloved characters’ happy endings. Some people accept that answer, some others try to fight me on it and change my mind.
I didn’t want to tell anyone the real reason. Doing so felt like giving the internet permission to speculate, to go over my actions and words with a fine-toothed comb like they always do when they get a crumb of information. But the truth is, my experience on the show was damaging in a lot of ways, and I know I am not the only one.
Part of the reason Solved! was so beloved to begin with was the friendship between those kids seemed real, and that was because it was. The reality is, now, with all the time and animosity that has grown between us like weeds, the show could never be as authentic as it used to be, because we are not the same as we used to be.
There’s a reason we don’t talk anymore. There are about ten of them, really. Until recently, it always felt safer to avoid the truth.
It’s been twenty years since that first photo was taken, and ten years since the last. I found them both yesterday afternoon, buried at the bottom of a box in the corner of my attic labelled “BETTER OFF FORGOTTEN”, lying beneath deconstructed friendship bracelets, ticket stubs to Titanic and The Mummy, pressed-paper-flowers and crushed paper-fortunes. MASH games that said I’d be married to Heath Ledger by now, and we’d live inside of a yellow submarine. Birthday cards signed I’ll love you forever and Be Mine Valentines from someone I once knew everything about, but don’t anymore.
I paid the past a visit, and I can’t put those girls back in that box. They deser… Moodboard for NONE OF THIS IS REAL by Kayla Joy:

The back door slid open and Viv wiped at her tears when she saw the reflections off Luci’s glittery gown. The door slid back closed, and Vivian didn’t turn to face her, but watched her shadow silhouette on the wall of the balcony.
“Soooo, are you spending the night out here now? Cause I can get you a sleeping bag if you want…” Luci’s voice said, a half-smile on her face that faded as Vivian turned to face her with a scold half-loaded.
“What the hell, man?” Vivian berated her. Luci sighed childishly and dropped her head back, looking up at the moon, and Vivian was almost certain she wasn’t listening to a word she said. “How could you?”
“How could I what, Viv?” Luci looked back at her with narrowed eyes. “Write my own life story, or tell you about it? I didn’t have to give you the heads up, you know. I kind of figured you’d react like this.”
That just made her angry again. “If you knew I’d react like this, then why would you do it?” Vivian asked with emphatic hand gestures she couldn’t control.
“I don’t…” Luci pouted her lip and puppied her eyes like she used to do as a kid and it always got her her way. Not tonight. “I thought you’d be happy to finally let it all out there. No more secrets. You can be honest, for once in your life.” Vivian clocked that for the insult it was and scoffed to hide the fact that she didn’t have a reply. Luci stepped forward, reaching out to take Vivian’s hand, her long and cold acrylics brushing against her palms. The touch made her chest ache like she poked a scar that never properly healed.
“Please,” Luci said, almost whispering, “I would not have done this if I thought it was a bad idea. I can’t believe that after all this time, you still believe I would ever hurt you.”
