On the evidence of the recent gigs I’ve seen (Italy / Athens / London) A Way Out is consistently the highlight now. One can hardly breathe listening to it.

Just realised that I’m a year ahead of myself - #LFF2025 !!

Yes that was my favourite of the earlier segments too. The first one reminded me of Guy Maddin a bit.

#LFF2026 Bi Gan pulls off another lengthy (40 mins), jaw dropping single shot take to end RESURRECTION, although the two hours to get there can be a slog as we visit five time slots built round a shonky SF premise about the loss of the ability to dream. Still, worth it for the end game on NYE 1999.

#LFF2026 Kicking off this year’s London Film Festival with Bi Gan’s ‘Resurrection’. On the basis of his previous film, ‘Long Day’s Journey Into Night’ I’m expecting to be confused and awed.

And it’s also the case that many of the men making the world awful are themselves quite old. They won’t be dealing with the ramifications of their actions for long.

Last night’s ‘Community Showcase’ at the Grove Theatre Dunstable not only included an excellent performance by my daughter, it also included a performance by compere David Arnold (who is a local lad) of his Bond composition ‘Only Myself to Blame’ previously sung by Scott Walker.

Thanks Rich. I realised today that I had a second list of possible albums to consider voting for, so can only apologise to Flotation Toy Warning, Espers, TV on the Radio, Ella Guru etc for my oversight. Not that the qualifiers would have been affected.

Presumably this lot have just caught up with The Small World of Sammy Lee (1963).

Have to say, this is quite weird

The only time I’ve been to Winchelsea was for the unveiling of that plaque.

I visited San Francisco in 1981 and spent most of a day visiting locations from Our Lady of Darkness, including Leiber’s flat on Geary St (his name was on the doorbell but I didn’t ring).

Amazing essay by @j-amesmarriott.bsky.social

Convincingly weaving the connection between literacy, reading, innovation, creativity and public engagement in democracy. And by corollary - the decline of literacy / reading a harbinger of democracy’s fall. Read it.

Of course, H&S wouldn’t allow this journey today and for good reasons. The off duty driver used to sleep on the floor, burbling into the microphone. More regular rest stops would be mandatory now.

I did London to Athens by coach 50 years ago in three days. Down through Germany and Yugoslavia, back through Italy. Two drivers, only stopped for rest breaks a few times. Pre-Euro so didn’t have any local currency at rest stops - unhappy loo attendants. Survived on cakes, sandwiches & whisky.

Me too. I saw it all in 1985 and again in 1999, when I cast my seven year old daughter into Hell in Doomsday. She seems to have survived the experience.

RIP Tony Harrison, poet and writer of The Mysteries at the National Theatre. I saw all three plays twice, since when they have been the best theatrical experience I’ve ever had and I suspect nothing will now replace them.

Yes, I have, but thanks. PH seemed very relaxed. There were things I didn’t know about the early years and the fact he hates rehearsing - which has rather demolished a mind’s eye image of him belting out songs in his home studio while being interrupted to see if he wants a cup of tea.

Terrific performance of Sondheim’s ‘Assassins’ by the excellent London amateur dramatic group SEDOS tonight - a challenging piece to pull off. Have subsequently found out that one of the characters, Sarah Jane Moore, who tried to assassinate Gerald Ford in 1975, actually died yesterday.

I get that the news cycle is packed right now, but I just heard from a colleague at the Smithsonian that this is fully a GIANT SQUID BEING EATEN BY A SPERM WHALE and it’s possibly the first ever confirmed video according to a friend at NOAA
