Right-wing bigots are up in arms that Ramadan lights have been switched on in London.

But why can't a minority share its festive joy with neighbours? It's not like they're forcing non-Muslims to fast or convert at the point of a sword.

#Ramadan kareem to all, including bigots.

For there to be an invasion, you need an invading army. Immigrants to Europe and America possess no such force.

For there to be colonisation, you need a colonising power that imposes an alien system. Immigrants to Europe and America possess no such power and live by local laws.

Four years on, the brutal Russian invasion of Ukraine shows no signs of ending or retreating. Meanwhile, ordinary Ukrainians, who are experiencing an extremely cold winter with much of the country's energy infrastructure knocked out, continue to suffer due to the whims of a land-grabbing major power

While Davos fixated on geopolitical threats, the elite gathering ignored the elephant in the room: extreme wealth inequality

This fuels many conflicts between and within countries, as well as the climate and ecological emergencies.

In just a single year, Donald Trump has been the most successful US president ever... in undermining democracy, overturning the global order and blowing up the western alliance.
January 20, 2026 at 8:32 AM
Donald Trump is the "isolationist" president in everything... except warmongering, imperialist expansionism, the exportation of radical right-wing politics, financial shakedowns and the bullying of countries that disagree.

White supremacists deride "wokeism" and critical theory yet have appropriated and twisted the language of post-colonialism and anti-imperialism. They fantasise that they are an oppressed indigenous group resisting invasion and undergoing cultural and physical erasure.

The irony is breath-taking.

Almost everyone Gaza is cold, hungry and traumatised.

Israel's latest decision to exclude 37 international aid organisations from Gaza is an act of exceeding cruelty and will amplify already impossible living conditions and ultimately cost lives.

With the great powers flexing their 💪 and swinging their 🍆 like it's the 19th century, the UN resembles the beleaguered League of Nations.

We need international law that applies to the powerful, not just the weak. And this time we need it before a global conflict breaks out.

What do Venezuela and Iraq have in common?

They were both oil-rich dictatorships that the US illegally attacked on the pretext of a non-existent phantom threat and supposedly to bring them freedom.

Let's hope Venezuela does not end up like Iraq.

Last year kicked off with Donald Trump's return to the White House, with disastrous consequences.

This year begins with Trump ordering the invasion of a sovereign state and the kidnapping of its leader.

Trump is no president of peace and is a warmongering interventionist.

The controversial Alaa Abd El-Fattah tweets are bigoted and shocking but he has expressed regret over them.

Moreover, he is not an anti-white Islamist but a secular ex-prisoner of conscience.

Finally, nobody should be stripped of their citizenship for expressing opinions.

Merry Christmas to everyone celebrating.

At a time of rising antisemitism, remember Jesus was a Jew.

At a time of rising anti-migrant sentiment, remember Jesus was a refugee.

And don't forget that in Jesus's homeland, Palestinians continue to live under extreme subjugation.

I have a confession to make: the Islamisation of America and Europe runs deeper than even the far right suspects.

Here, I expose five big ways in which Islam has (not) influenced the West.

Trigger warning: Read this at your own peril.

This is an image, quite literally, of love overpowering hatred, of common humanity winning over narrow tribalism.
I applaud Ahmad al-Ahmad for putting his life on the line to save the lives of others.

The world desperately needs more Ahmad al-Ahmads.

Hanukkah should be about joy but it turned into grief in Australia.

The cold-blooded murder of Jews celebrating Hanukkah on Bondi beach is a horrendous act of antisemitism.

My heart goes out to the victims and survivors.

Congratulations to the people of Syria on the first anniversary of the fall of the Assad regime.

I hope not only that Syria manages to rebuild but that it builds back better, constructing a society that is free, fair and prosperous.

It is ironic that four countries in Europe are pulling out of next year's Eurovision song contest so that one country outside Europe can participate.

It is the height of hypocrisy that the European Broadcasting Union allows Israel to participate while excluding Russia.

One fascinating modern Christmas tradition that will intrigue future historians involves conservatives complaining bitterly about the supposed cancellation of Christmas while everywhere around them Christmas is being celebrated.

At COP30, while public statements talked up "high quality" carbon markets, concerted efforts were made in negotiations to water down the already inadequate Article 6 rule book.

Our conclusion: countries must fix Article 6 and not use carbon credits.

The UN Security Council resolution on #Gaza marks a return to the bad old days of the "protectorate" and does absolutely nothing to address the underlying issues.

Its only redeeming factor is to offer short-term reprieve from total war for the traumatised, shelterless and starved people of Gaza.

That foreigners paid to go and shoot Bosnians in Sarajevo like they were just wild game is a sickening aberration.

It's been almost 15 years since hope of bread, freedom and dignity erupted in #Egypt. Few traces of that remain today.

How and why did the Egyptian revolution end so tragically?

Here, I reflect on the Egyptian (counter)revolution

Freedom foiled: Reflections on the Egyptian (counter)revolution – #25YearsAJournalist - The Chronikler
Writing about the Egyptian revolution and counterrevolution was a rollercoaster of hopeful elation followed by gutting disillusionment. Rarely have so many sacrificed so much for so little.

Ten years ago, ISIS terrorists killed 130 people in Paris and left hundreds wounded and traumatised

But despite what 21st-century jihadists and crusaders claim, there is no clash of civilisations, except in the minds of extremists. We actually live in a mash of civilisations, and this irks fanatics
