Have you ever played the campaign version of Inspectres? It looks hilarious but I've never experienced more than a one shot

See, he may be one of the worst humans alive, but Harvey served a purpose in keeping Hollywood functional! Leto would just be killed if he tried that in the 90s.

The subtle statistical shift from terrifying, deadly early game play to mid/late game play, where a PC can basically accomplish anything they can imagine in a session or two is really well disguised

I think the most beautiful trick apocalypse world, like Lacuna before it, plays, is that it uses Color/tone to trick the players into not realizing that they're the ones with overwhelming mechanical power in their hands
kimberlydairine.bsky.social
So, while crossing apocalypse world with d&d makes a lot of sense from a marketing standpoint, it's a creative mismatch at the core of the game that leads to that book being left on a lot of shelves
kimberlydairine.bsky.social
The Move structure is good at passing immense amounts of plot power into the hands of the players and their dice. So either you have to cheat the players of some of that power, or you have to change the genre of Fantasy to not have, like, folks way way out of reach

"There are no status quos in apocalypse world" is heavily baked into the rules of AW and that's not a sentiment that plays nicely with fantasy dungeon adventures. Sure, you can take that specific rule out, but there's an unresolveable tension between two poles in dungeon world
kimberlydairine.bsky.social
That makes sense, because Dungeon World is quite mediocre
kimberlydairine.bsky.social
Hell I'd run Lacuna at a con, and inspectres, both with the idea that it was my job as GM to make sure the plot happened
kimberlydairine.bsky.social
Like I'd played unknown armies, over the edge, legend of the five rings, deadlands, sorcerer, dogs in the vineyard, fate, dread, just all sorts of shit, but was still running them all with gm force without realizing it was possible to let go
kimberlydairine.bsky.social
I tried a lot of things but honestly I didn't fully get that games could be fundamentally different from what I was used to until I ran Apocalypse World

Will, a grizzled old cowboy with an Annoying Voice, showed up and asked to join. Our first prisoner, we, well, uh, sold for a few bux to our buddies in the Caocam Pact when they came by. Our second one broke free and we let him leave. Our third one just recovered from psychite withdrawal.
