"The ultimate aim of authoritarian propagandists is often to sow so much doubt and confusion that it leaves people passive and ready to give up their agency to a strongman leader. Conspiracy theory narratives are particularly useful for this."

"There are accounts that are run by troll farms, that are run by nation states, and then there are accounts that are just trying to make a buck by pretending to be American.

There is always some money to be made from fanning America's culture wars on social media."
Dozens of high-engagement accounts on X, including some pro and anti-Trump users, have been accused of misleading users following the roll-out of a new transparency feature that shows user locations.

👀
The reason why platform companies do make it hard to find account location information is not because they believe in privacy, it's so that advertisers do not know how much is lost to low-tier engagement.

Growth, at all costs, means avoiding publishing basic metadata so that advertisers don't sue.

This is really scary...

Having followed Orbán's governance of Hungary for 15 years, I must say that this makes perfect sense.
1/This week has seen a blitz of what looks like corruption sandals: Saudi development deals for US military tech, Pakistani payments to Trump insiders for tariff relief, Swiss gold bars for a trade deal. Far from a payoff, this is a reordering of internat'l system.

Twitter pays people based on engagement (views, retweets, comments, etc). It appears that many MAGA accounts are based abroad and they use AI technology to generate low-effort rage bait.

My guess is that this will get worse as AI tech improves. For instance, fake videos of minorities doing crime.

It's actually extremely easy to influence LLMs with prompt injections and training data insertions. This is why a lot of orgs are moving away from the "scrape it all and let legal sort it out later" providers.

We're also seeing unproven marketing claims coming out of LLMs as fact.
November 21, 2025 at 1:41 PM
👀
So it's not just malign state actors influencing these LLMs. Marketers all across the board are influencing the training of these LLMs so that they market their products for them.

While the regulatory procedures based on laws are always helpful, it is obvious, once again, that the main aspects of the digital sphere (platforms, data, AI etc.) are political issues, because they have to do with power and the inscriptions of it. So, we need political -not legal- answers to them.
The EU promised to lead on regulating artificial intelligence. Now it’s hitting pause.
Under pressure from the U.S. and tech companies, the EU is backing away from plans to rein in highly risky technologies.

As I reflect on the ways in which generative AI is going to change human relationships, it strikes me that these “validating machines” are going to be more consistent and reliable than any human because they don’t express doubt or counter-evidence.

Ego glazing is the AI equivalent of love-bombing.
