Who Did What At Irem: A (Semi-)Comprehensive Thread

Today, we're going to be doing a deepdive on one of the premier arcade giants of the 1980's. We're all familiar with enduring classics such as R-Type and In The Hunt, but who were the talented men & women that created them?

Yep! Cyber returned to hibernation after crawling out of his hole to yell at Eadmaster, Sam opened a new PCrown thread on RHDN in February, radio silence from both of them ever since. (For those keeping score, it took Eadmaster 8 months to convert their v0.3 beta patch into a finished release)

Update:

Mitsuru Kawai (Designer)

We finally got certifiable evidence from Akio himself, not only that MK and Kinte are one and the same, but also a nearly complete list of every game Kawai did graphics for while at Irem.
"Zippy Race's chief was a genius dot artist who served as head (of the art division) when I joined Irem.
Later, he became the department head at NAZCA.
The titles he worked on are as follows:

Zippy Race
Tropical Angel
Lode Runner (Arcade version)
Battle Bird
Vigilante
Cross Blades

I think that's all correct,
but sorry if I got any wrong.
I recall his credit name was usually either KINTE or M.K.
When he was leaving Irem, I rummaged through his desk while he was packing up his things. I still remember the pixel art I found there was terrifyingly good."

Correct, but this was an Aicom game, and Aicom had no staff overlap with Irem (see quoted post below)

The first wave of Irem defectors to SNK were mainly only involved with Ghost Pilots, Last Resort, Top Hunter and KOF 94.

Furthermore, Michio Sato (Director of Blazing Star, co-planner of Viewpoint) is on record stating he doesn't remember any former Irem staff working at Aicom during his tenure.
Sato: "Come to think of it, I've often seen rumors that there were former Irem employees at Aicom, but I don't recall any myself. At least not on the staff of Blazing Star. I'm not sure about Pulstar, since I wasn't directly involved with that game, but from what I've heard, I don't think there was any there either."

Clenched the 2 loop clear on Cotton Reboot High Tension! Fantastic game, might even be top 3 in the whole series.

Lets see if we can't crack 25 billion before the Marion DLC drops

Cotton renaissance got us eating too good. High Tension's easily the best console-exclusive in the whole series.

Bit lengthy for a 2-loop game, but that's my only real nitpick. (That and PSN leaderboards weren't accepting scores above 4.3 billion, but the latest update seems to have fixed it)
kino503.bsky.social
Yeah it's pretty wack, they should've disabled continues outside Story Mode.

Even worse, the PSN online leaderboards don't seem to be functioning properly? I've cracked 10 billion in Arcade Mode multiple times, but it still has my score at 4 billion for some reason.

Was trying to find a tweet showing the comparisons between the old DVD and BDs for Serial Experiments Lain, and I found some funny storytelling
Tweet from sherlock homo (@rumio_k)

"there is only 1 BD/DVD copy of serial experiments lain in the entire library system and I have been battling it out for more than 2 months

I finally made it to first in line but that last person just refuses to return it..."

The image attached is the library's on-hold database record Tweet from Rammy (@HarmoniousRoses)

"today i found out i accidentally stole a dvd of serial experiments lain from my public library after booting up my ps2 for the first time in a while"

The image is a gif of Yoriko from You're Under Arrest, placing her hands on her head and sticking her tongue out, in reference to doing something silly.

My wife is in Vogue shitting on your AI-generated "art" 💜 www.vogue.com/article/matt...
Well, everything. The death of art. [Laughs.] A thing that I’ve been struck by in the last year of tech development around art is that what makes us human is making art, even if you’re not a professional artist. This is kind of corny, but I think about cavemen, right? One of the first things we ever did as a species was put our handprints on a wall, and it’s just this drive that has always been there. It’ll always be there. And I think it’s preposterous that these people are suggesting that they develop this technology, and the first thing they want to eliminate is art, so you have more time to…what, email? I don’t know what they think I’m going to do with my fucking day. Most of the population is not artists, but a lot of the population has artistic hobbies, and if you replace that with a computer doing it for you or whatever, it’s just pointless. I think there’s a death drive in these people, almost, and an actual hatred of artists; they are jealous of people with imagination because they don’t have one, and they almost consciously want to eliminate it.

I am going to be abundantly real with you

If youre seeing what theyre doing to sexual self expression online and youre still handwringing over drawings or writing that doesnt even involve meatspace human beings i think you need to stop being a little fucking bitch and grow the fuck up

Just in case the above visual comparison wasn't convincing enough, here it is spelled out
"Masanori Morita/IREM

In addition to maps and items, there was a concept called Karma, which meant that you couldn't change your level without it, and that prices would rise along with your level, which was a fresh idea."

Interesting! I was comparing this with Famitsu's figures as of one year prior, the difference in rank between Sakura Taisen 2 vs. the original caught my eye. Wonder what accounts for Sakura 1 making such a dramatic comeback in that short a time?
kino503.bsky.social
I almost laughed when they took it away. You're 90% thru her chapter, battles are finally becoming sorta fun, and Vanillaware still had to step in and say "no more of that!" lol

Beautiful game to look at, but ultimately a stepping stone for much better work later in their career

The worst part is, the Evil Gradriel transformation they grant you *kinda* solves the main issues with the battle system.... only for them to permanently strip you of the ability by the time you see the next boss. 💀
