Remember at the beginning of the season when we didnt know how Will was gonna be yet and we didnt yet know that he was the best man the show has cast in years? #bb27

"I'm tired of these short-ass seasons and terrible finales."

Ava Coleman gets me on such a profound level.

Yess. Apparently everyone's got extra dialogue here and there. (I missed a really cute scene in the Zalmour fight between Alma and Mustadio because Alma never got attacked lol)

I'm about to fight Wiegraf again and I'm seriously debating bringing Boco along to see if they recognize each other lol

I'm pretty sure the AI hasn't been retooled, I think it's just that since the job classes on Guests are locked now and they gave Agrias White Magic, her "heal my injured allies" decision point is overriding her "kill everything" decision.

The glow up my girl Agrias got in this Final Fantasy Tactics remaster is incredible.

Enemy combatant: stop lying about everything Ramza you lying heretic bastard boy.

Agrias: well, actually

Even going back to Egghead we've got the 3 satellites and several new female Marines and agents.

I dunno, Ive always loved the women in One Piece (I mean Nami and Robin are the best characters) but I remember being bummed with how the rare female pirate was always either tokenized or novel.
kitsuneinferno.bsky.social
I joked a while back that Kaido was a feminist because he had a multiple women on his crew, but ever since that there's been a lot more representation on all fronts. The Rocks crew, the Knights of God, even Shakky and Eris have had great characterization despite being placed in damselly roles.
kitsuneinferno.bsky.social
It always bothered me how Shanks and Whitebeard and Roger seemed to have no women in their crews, and the occasional group/faction would have a token woman, but ever since the Doflamingo crew (though still somewhat shaky), Oda's really done some great work with this.
kitsuneinferno.bsky.social
I'm really enjoying these latest One Piece chapters, especially because there's a ton of really great female representation throughout. Oda's been steadily improving his writing of women since the timeskip, with a few needling and unfortunate exceptions.

Okay THIS was next level. #bb27

I always was sorta bothered/confused by Ava not being part of the Judges because I think it could have avoided what happened in the White Locust twist but this is soooooo slick on Ashley's part. Amazing.

ashley said she wanted to leave ava out of the alliance to turn her against will if she was in a position where she had to in the future lol
kitsuneinferno.bsky.social
Even the Wiki describes her as "a stern middle-aged woman with a no-nonsense attitude", but in the Japanese script, she speaks informally, like you'd expect a "school nurse" who knows that she's working with children would sound, and I think even some of her line reads are sarcastic.
kitsuneinferno.bsky.social
And space limitations are an unfortunate evil of the time that lead to some clunky lines here and there that are not well thought out and rob the characters of their personality.

Like, Dr. Kadowaki in the og script has a very casual way of speaking. The English tl makes her feel cold and blunt.
kitsuneinferno.bsky.social
Typo aside (it's not in my script I swear), I think this captures the essence of both words, though "bring up" still sounds ever so slightly clunky to me.

In general, FF8 has a solid English translation, much more faithful and coherent than FF7's. But it also gets a bit literal at times.
kitsuneinferno.bsky.social
In my translation, I decided to preserve the symmetry AND the "garden and seed" metaphor, and I'm super pleased with it:

"SEED exists to bring down Witches. Garden exist to bring up SEEDs."
kitsuneinferno.bsky.social
But then we have the second word "sodatemasu" which is nurture, grow, develop. The official translation also goes literal here, but it loses the "garden and seed" metaphor in the process. "sodatemasu" also means to "raise" or "bring up".
kitsuneinferno.bsky.social
If this is starting to trigger some synapses for you, yes, this is exactly the same word that gave us the infamous "I, Garland, will knock you all down" from the original Final Fantasy translation!

It's used to say like, "I'm taking you down"/toppling/overthrowing you.
kitsuneinferno.bsky.social
The official translation is honestly kind of clunky here. "SeeD will defeat the sorceress. The Garden will train SeeD members.", but there's a fun symmetry and poetry in the word choices of the original script.

First we have "taoshimasu" which means "defeat", but more literally means "knock down".
kitsuneinferno.bsky.social
It's also fun to find little things in the Japanese script that aren't so obvious that the official tl missed.

Like when Cid explains SeeD to Squall. In Japanese he says "SeeD wa majo o taoshimasu" (roughly "SeeD defeats witches") and "Garden wa SeeD o sodatemasu" ("Garden nurtures SeeDs")
kitsuneinferno.bsky.social
It's been a long time since I've played the game all the way through and I don't remember much of the script in the middle but I'm kind of tickled when I make the exact same
localization choices that the translators did 26 years ago lol.
kitsuneinferno.bsky.social
I've been doing a retranslation/relocalization of Final Fantasy VIII as a treat to myself/hobbyist project to help learn Japanese better and I've been using the Japanese script as a base and deliberately not referencing the original translation until I add my edited script to the game files...

Taking a break here as the groups get bigger and bigger and I have less interesting things to say about everyone, I'll probably cut the photos until we get to actual Veto winners moving forward.
kitsuneinferno.bsky.social
336th. (11 hg tie) 0 wins out of 8 comps (3/3)

Turner and Bowie Jane both won THREE HoHs on their season with no Vetos to show for it.

I believe Ava Pearl has a prompt.

336th. (11 hg tie) 0 wins out of 8 comps (2/3)

Sam, Christie, and Azah all also have HoHs under their belt.

Azah and Derek are also the first people on this list to have the same placement from the same season (not counting the 0 comps of course). They won't be the last.
kitsuneinferno.bsky.social
In 336th place, we have the ELEVEN players to win 0 Vetoes after playing in 8 comps.

Roddy, Sheila, GinaMarie, and Christmas all won HoHs on their seasons.
