Hey, I'm Katie!

I'm multiply ND, queer and permanantly knackered.

I'm a community researcher on cancer service experiences of marginalised people.

I've published things and conferenced things, and now I'm doing a PhD around Autistic trans+ people's experiences of health and social care.
We are getting so close to sewing our community-made flag. A few more sessions to go and it'll be ready. Here is a recap on some of the stories we have been privileged to hear, before we go onto the next phase...🌈🎓
Trans Aware Cancer Care: Why Listening Saves Lives
Trans+ individuals in the UK face significant barriers in accessing cancer care, leading to lower screening rates and heightened health risks. The Trans Aware Cancer Care project highlights personal stories, emphasising the need for systemic changes, including inclusive practices and staff education. Positive interactions can improve care experiences and outcomes significantly.

When you get to that time in the month when you have to sell all your things to stay afloat...

As a person who struggles with working memory, demand avoidance and a big dollop of CBA, I have tried all sorts of "get your shit together" apps.

I usually last a week, a month if I'm lucky.

Finch helps me remember my meds, drinking and even to enjoy myself!? Here's to another 500 days.

OMG, I'm a relativist!
It took me a long time to understand epistemology and ontology, let alone where I stood within these areas. Here is a helpful guide to what all these long words mean! #AutResearch 🌈🎓
Philosophical Foundations: Ontology and Epistemology Explained
The author reflects on their difficulty understanding ontology and epistemology during their undergraduate studies, ultimately identifying as a relativist-constructionist. They explain ontology as the exploration of existence and reality perception, while epistemology examines knowledge acquisition. Different epistemological perspectives include objectivism, constructionism, and subjectivism, shaping research approaches and interpretations.

This blog is based on my chapter Double Empathy and the Double Rainbow: Healthcare Inequities for Gender Diverse Autistic Adults in the Double Empathy reader. These slides were created and shared for the second PARC Double Empathy series in 2025.
Understanding Double Empathy in TGD Autistic Healthcare
The blog discusses healthcare inequities faced by gender diverse autistic adults, emphasizing the Double Empathy Problem. It highlights systemic barriers, biases in healthcare, and the challenges posed by transmedicalism. Recommendations for practitioners include checking biases, using inclusive language, and valuing lived experiences to foster equitable healthcare environments.

The Power of Kindness in Healthcare
Kindness is a free yet scarce resource in healthcare, often hindered by systemic issues like staff exhaustion and bias. Sharing personal stories fosters empathy and connection, creating a sense of belonging. Community-driven research enriches understanding and advocacy, reminding us of the importance of kindness in sustaining human connection amidst challenges.

In this blog I share recommendations from two pieces of work on Autistic people’s experiences of accessing, or trying to access, gender identity healthcare. #Trans #Autistic #Accessibility #AutResearch 🎓🌈
Inclusive Practices for Better Gender Identity Care
To improve gender identity healthcare for autistic and neurodivergent individuals, key recommendations include hiring a trans healthcare coordinator, enhancing GP training, prioritizing trauma-informed care, and ensuring accessibility. Participants emphasise the need for empathy, communication, and a patient-centered approach that recognises and addresses the unique challenges faced by this community.
