Andrew Cuomo is incapable of speaking clearly and directly about Trump’s authoritarianism.

This is the correct “can we afford it” framing for everything.

We always do infinitely more to support each other than what shows up on balance sheets. If work is being done, the capacity is there to pay people for it by definition. And the distributive effects are pretty much always positive.

As the brilliant Michael Kinnucan points out, it's more than a bit strange that there's a debate over whether New York can afford universal childcare. New York already has universal childcare! Every single child is cared for by somebody. Small children are never left home all day by themselves.

"Blue Bonds are the good version of Trump's beloved shitcoins. Rather than wildcat money created by and for speculators, Blue Bonds are a source of public prosperity, backed by a present or future Fed under democratic control, accountable to the people."

There’s an element of trust too. If you are on an AI platform doing social stuff you can trust that everything is fiction. When you are on a social platform you can’t use a simple assumption of mostly real or mostly fictional.

@mmasnick.bsky.social the answer is context!

As an engineer, I deal with lots and lots of numbers. What brings value to my work is the context I bring to those numbers as I help project leaders make informed decisions.

I know so little about Africa; I appreciated this episode a lot. I would encourage other listeners to broaden the their understanding of how Africa came to be trapped in their current situation by also learning from Fadhel Kaboub.

Fadhel Kaboub describes the unfinished business of decolonizing Africa and urges leaders to stop using the concept of "Food Security" as a policy goal because it is a dangerous post-colonial recipe for hunger & economic entrapment. Details in this 7-min clip

It is *literally* "I'm fine with the Nazis and fascists, but can't stand the people who pointed out I was full of shit."

My goodness.
As compared to other people with a similar level of public prominence — so not heads-of-state or celebrities or NFL quarterbacks — I was a “trending topic” on Twitter as often as just about anyone for a period from roughly 2018-2021. Matt Yglesias and Maggie Haberman also come to mind as other people who share this particular “honor”, which is not a welcome one: it means you’re the main character of the day, the person that other people have decided to dogpile upon.5

There’s still some of this. If you tweet about election-related stuff, there is a pervasive tendency to “shoot the messenger” from partisans when the polls aren’t going their way. But much less than there once was: no more of the dogpiles for exceptionally strange reasons that I couldn’t even explain to my IRL friends.

And that’s because this behavior — I guess you could call it harassment but I’m a big boy and I can take it — consistently came from a relatively narrow group of power users, birds of a feather who flocked together, people who could demonstrate their fidelity to the group by picking on the main character. On Bluesky, exactly the same people — and I do mean exactly6 — attack exactly the same perpetual enemies, but to roughly 1/60th7 the size of the audience.

the President, who is not running for election, still sends out fundraising emails on the daily. this guy does ads saying "we've reached the max we can spend, don't give us more money." remarkable stuff that I think resonates with people who yearn for change and justice

What good is being VP if you can't abuse your power to have the Army Corps of Engineers making your kayaking trip more ideal by changing the waterflow of a lake?

JD Vance’s team had the army corps of engineers take the unusual step of changing the outflow of a lake in Ohio to accommodate a recent boating excursion on a family holiday, the Guardian has learned.

The request from the US Secret Service was made to “support safe navigation” of the US vice-president’s security detail for an August outing on the Little Miami River, according to a statement by the US army corps of engineers (USACE).

Vance was spotted in the south-western Ohio area on 2 August, his 41st birthday, according to social media posts that noted he was seen canoeing on the river, a tributary that Caesar Creek Lake feeds into.

One source with knowledge of the matter who communicated with the Guardian anonymously alleged that the outflow request for the Caesar Creek Lake was not just to support the vice-president’s Secret Service detail, but also to create “ideal kayaking conditions”. The Guardian could not independently confirm this specific claim.
