➡️ I support this motion.
➡️ I hope we can ensure Canada rigorously investigates, confronts, and safeguards its obligations to justice and human dignity.
➡️ I invite you to listen to both mine and Senator Woo’s speeches in full, and to engage, question, share. 3/3

This motion isn’t abstract or theoretical. It’s a call for accountability. It’s a call for transparency. It’s a call for Canada to live up to its responsibilities on the world stage. 2/3

Senator Woo’s motion calls on the Government of Canada to examine and report, within 3 months, “the risk of Canada’s complicity in violations of international law (including war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide).” 1/3

By helping more people access jobs, housing, and community supports, Bill S-207 represents a step toward decolonizing Canada’s criminal legal system — saving human, social, and financial costs, and strengthening our communities in the process. 3/3

Our collective history reminds us that justice and inclusion are not achieved by chance but through persistent advocacy, solidarity, and the courage to challenge injustice in all its forms. Let’s continue learning from the past to build a more inclusive and equitable future for all. 3/3

As we celebrate progress, we must also recommit to dismantling the systemic barriers that continue to marginalize women and 2SLGBTQIA+ communities. 2/3

Today, on #MMIW Action Day, we honour the lives of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit People and demand justice and accountability. Too many lives have been lost while governments continue to resist implementing the National Inquiry’s Calls for Justice. 1/2

Of the 3.8 million Canadians with criminal records, 9 in 10 do not have a pardon or record suspension. At the rate that the Parole Board of Canada rendered decisions last year, it would take 256 years and counting to consider applications relating to all current criminal records.

Imagine what could be achieved if resources currently used to criminalize and imprison were redirected into Indigenous communities — into housing, health care, and supports that prevent harm before it happens.
It’s time for Canada to invest in Indigenous People and communities over prisons. 2/2

Yesterday in Question Period, I pressed the government on its failure to address the persistent overrepresentation of Indigenous Peoples in Canada’s prisons. Mass incarceration carries immense social and financial costs. 1/2

May we listen, learn, and act together to uphold justice and ensure that the truths of Indigenous Peoples are never forgotten. 3/3
