For some impression of the river, here's the section just upstream of the bridge, from back in 2015. It's not a small channel down here - imagine all of this filled with a raging flood...
looking upstream at very wide riverbed full of gravel and a little flowing water looking downstream at very wide riverbed full of gravel and a little flowing water. A bridge is in the distance crossing the channel

The Matai’an landslide dam in eastern Taiwan has failed this afternoon (eos.org/thelandslide...), flooding Guangfu, about 15 km downstream focustaiwan.tw/society/2025.... Even in the middle of a typhoon, the resulting flood produced a detectable seismic signal at stations ~40 km away.
Seismic waveforms and power spectral density plots showing the signal of a landslide lake outburst flood. Planet satellite image from August 2025 of a large landslide blocking a river and creating a lake.

Just with a quick glance, the flood can be seen 10-15 minutes before it arrived at Guangfu. The power of fluvial seismology!

Day two of the 4th IAG-EGU intensive course for young geomorphogists! Beautiful weather, beautiful scenery, a giant landslide, TLS, ERT, and CRN sampling - it was a great day!

First day of the 4th IAG-EGU intensive course for young geomorphogists! Slightly wet, and a little cloudy, but everyone was excited to learn about soil erosion processes and human impacts, and dendrogeomorphology and avalanches! #IAG #EGU

NEW: Tonight, this is all that remains of Nepal's seat of government in Kathmandu.

Singha Durbar was the largest palace in Asia; home to the Prime Minister & government offices.

A 48-hour revolution, led by Gen Z protestors, has toppled the government & left large parts of the capital in flames.

The situation in Nepal has escalated today, it's really worrying. Hoping that all my Nepali friends and colleagues can stay safe. www.nytimes.com/live/2025/09...

It's 12:00 somewhere...

It's always really frustrating though.
If there's any chance of coming to EGU next year, you are more than welcome to give it a try over here 😀
kristencook.bsky.social
GSA had a massive increase in session proposals this year - I don't remember the numbers, but I remember being surprised by them. I'd be even more surprised if the abstracts increased proportionally, so I'd guess that a lot of sessions didn't make it this year...

This is often the case, calling people downstream is an extremely effective EWS! I've wondered about the costs of hiring someone to sit up by the lake with their phone vs. the cost of an automated warning system...

The valley below this transition from U-shaped low gradient to V-shaped steep is absolutely full of sediment. Perfect conditions for generating a debris flow. Upstream, it looks like pre-GLOF it was a lot of underground flow and not established channels, which will affect the flow propagation.
kristencook.bsky.social
If you look at the topography it makes sense. The larger lakes are in the flat glacial part of the valley. You now see some erosion and channelization in the upper part on the steeper steps in the topography, but the debris flow really gets going right where the valley steepens and narrows.
