looking forward to discussing truth and lies in Jurek Becker's "Jakob der Lügner" with students the next 3 weeks. An amazing work of literature. Day 1 we will dig into the complicated narrator and what it means to be a survivor storyteller.

A coworker took this from her apartment. I haven't seen a crowd this size before. Maybe the first Women's March? But it was much much warmer that day. ICE OUT OF MINNESOTA!

This week in German class: the scene in Babylon Berlin where the chief of police says that they need to suppress demonstrations to "protect democracy". Warns about "radicals" bringing chaos to the streets, increases police presence in left-leaning areas, & passes out guns to be used ag. civilians

inspired by @slayyypod.bsky.social friends to create a little "cheat sheet" for my intermediate learners. They always struggle with the "mir" idioms and I thought we'll focus on those next week. #teachGerman #DaF #langchat

Frohes Neues!
Here is a communicative activity for intermediate #DaF learners, rank what they think the top 8 New Years resolutions are and then reveal statistic and discuss. Also discuss any cultural differences, possible differences for younger people vs older people. #langchat #teachGerman

😭 how can they still call themselves a "liberal arts college"?!
For my fellow Cornell College alumni, of which I know there are several here, they're killing numerous majors on campus and further diluting the purpose of being a liberal arts school.

No languages! No classics! No religion!

A senior student came to present photos from junior study abroad to an intermediate class, and she talked about all the connections she made from previous German classes to things she saw "in the wild". So wonderful. A bright spot in a tough week!

Students are preparing to "pitch" an invention of the future in German class (think "Shark Tank"). I asked a business major if he has done something like this before and he said he has done the most presentations in German class. 👏👏👏 #BuildingSkills #langchat
