풍력과 태양광을 포함한 재생에너지원은 올해 1월부터 6월까지 전세계에서 5,072TWh의 전력을 생산했다. 같은 기간 석탄 발전량 4,896TWh를 넘어서는 수치다.

인류가 석탄 중심의 전력 구조를 벗어나는 첫 전환점을 맞이했다는 평가가 나온다.

전세계 전력 수요는 지난해 같은 기간 대비 2.6%(369TWh) 증가했지만 태양광 발전량이 306TWh, 풍력 발전량이 97TWh 늘어나며 증가분을 충분히 상쇄했다고 설명했다.
