Paleoecologist studying birds and trying to get my PhD.
I run a-dinosaur-a-day on tumblr.
Queer, Disabled, Neurodivergent, Anarchocommunist, Scottish-Sephardic Jew.
Birds are Wonderful Dinosaurs. I live with 5 of them, and my spouse Max Wipson.
I would sell my entire soul for all my fellow science communicators to stop ending the "story of the dinosaurs" at the end-cretaceous extinction and dive into, even briefly, the story of cenozoic birds. I'm also willing to offer cash, I just don't have much of it.

The world’s oldest known living banded bird, Mōlī (Laysan albatross) queen, has returned to Kuailhelani (Midway Atoll). #Birds

I just saw someone claim the popularization of Sigd is "propagandistic" as if it's not Beta Israel asking for equivalent exchange - they adopted Chanukah, they're just asking for the rest of us to adopt Sigd

like, could people just, not always assume everything has ulterior motives. lmao.

see you can trust my opinion on #homestuck (that it's actually quite an excellent work of transformative literature) because there are so alarmingly few birds or dinosaurs of any kind, my usual biases don't kick in.

I really hope “The Dinosaurs” follows a similar format as #LifeOnOurPlanet but uses it as an opportunity to highlight how living dinosaurs (birds) share similarities with the entire dinosaur family tree (not just theropods)

But I won’t hold my breath >_<

Reminder again that some are currently excited to re-start the gas chambers, & they think it’s finally ‘their time.’

They even gleefully say that they’re “ready to watch people burn.”

Be safe, everyone.

23 October 1943 | A transport of 1,035 Jews deported from Rome arrived at Auschwitz. After the selection 149 men & 47 women were registered in the camp. The remaining 839 people were murdered in gas chambers.

Mario, Mara Cesira & Sandro Sonnino among them.

I will die in the hill that apes ARE monkeys and that insisting on a distinction between them is founded in anthropocentrism.

Another thing this email trove has convinced me of is that NYT has been actively and consciously helping Trump since 2015. It wasn't just casual sexism, double standards, and political reporting Kayfabe. They were doing catch and kill

A good thread and good reminder that we need better ways to talk about nature loss. 🪶
I grew up in Ohio, obsessed with Ohio birds. Then spent ~10 years away for undergrad research and grad school before being back in Ohio.

And the biodiversity loss is obvious just over that 10 year period-- birds that used to be relatively easy to find are just...not anymore.

I wouldn’t call it minor - it would make up for the scicomm blunders of s2, and more to the point, insert an essay here about the necessity of realizing birds are dinosaurs for conservation
It’s a minor thing, but I hope Prehistoric Planet: Ice Age emphasises that birds are dinosaurs this time. It’d make a great way to create a bridge between the two time periods, and make for some shock-wow factor for lay audiences where that’s still surprisingly poorly understood.

My main takeaway from the haunted museum event yesterday was that human extinction might be *too* spooky for most people lmao

can't believe it took until someone said "hand me the goat and the pig" for me to realize that the specimens I pulled for the museum haunted house were in love this entire time

Guest: so why’d you become a paleontologist?
Me: I was born in 1992 so I was assigned paleontologist at birth
Guest group: *loud long laughter*
Me internally: I’ve done it. I have finally mastered human interaction

These changes pretty much mean that if you enroll in an MS program, you will never get the NSF GRFP. The GRFP more typically covers PhD projects than MS because they cover 3 years of funding, so you are already less likely to get it for an MS project, but now you can’t apply if you have an MS…
Announcing such a major change to NSF GRFP this late in the cycle is incredibly cruel. 2nd yr students (mine included) have been working so hard on their proposals despite ongoing uncertainty. They are driven and passionate about being outstanding scientists and helping those coming up behind them.
