Yes
I’m so sorry Michael Shannon but you have to play John Brown
If you were a despotic president, what movie would you force Hollywood to make? I want to see Quentin's Star Trek movie or maybe Kill Bill Vol 3.

I've seen the pendulum really swing against the possibility of alien life, and I just don't understand it. Like I agree intelligent aliens have not visited Earth, but it's a really big universe out there, and to suggest that there is no alien life among the trillions of stars is absurd
New polling on aliens
% of U.S. adult citizens who believe the following definitely or probably exist:
Aliens 56%
Bigfoot 28%
The Yeti 23%
The Loch Ness Monster 22%
Chupacabra 16%

It's wild to me that nobody looks at the huge backlog of cases and thinks "maybe we need more judges and stuff". No, the obvious conclusion is to go full kangaroo court?

i think you get the right to call some of your detractors mentally ill after a guy who was banned from another website for threatening your life kills two people
They're not false. You very consistently call the people you disagree mentally ill, and worse. What do you think the "correct" reaction is supposed to be when many of these people are trans, or Black? Why do you think you are entitled to indulge in this behavior?

My big frustration with calling customer service is how hard they try to drive you to the website. And like... I get it. But I'm tech savvy and if I'm calling it's because I have a problem I can't solve through your self-service systems
Also, every service.

Basically every visit to see my mom is 50% working through 2FA systems with her so she can pay utility bills.
We're drowning in passwords & multi-factor authentication & chatbots & "unusually high call volume" & robots ignoring "representative!"

We should think more carefully about how Social Security uses these tools with our parents & grandparents.

I'm not sure how meaningful the rejection rate is when the application rate is that low
The Fed can lower interest rates — but can they lower the mortgage application REJECTION rate?

My 6yo has started pretend electronic locking her bedroom door at night so Trump can't get in. She seemed to think that he himself is going into homes and causing harm. There are children in her school whose families have been impacted by ICE so we assume this is where the concern came from.
A Wash Post review found instances of parents arrested near campuses in at least 10 states so far this year. Actions near campuses—which include shooting a man, releasing tear gas and engaging in a car chase—have prompted lockdowns. @justinemcdaniel.bsky.social www.washingtonpost.com/education/20...
In cities targeted by ICE, empty desks and school disruptions follow
One in 5 students in Charlotte missed school after a recent ICE crackdown began. It’s the latest city where schools felt the impact of Trump’s deportation effort.

Wait, I wanna see
I generally try not to comment on Twitter but Isaac Chotiner is over there giving Semafor body blows right now and I just want to say I find it alarming that he's allowed to come for you without warning (asking for an interview)

The way you know nobody on the right cares about women's sports is that, following the discussion, you could be forgiven for thinking trans men don't exist
it’s also a thing where people can be convinced. the right got some people worked up about trans women in sports but possible to get people a lot more worked up about individual/parental rights, genital inspectors, etc
I think Democrats should double down on trans rights now. It's obvious that most voters don't care about it so you might as well stick with your principles and goad Republicans into focusing on it at the expense of everything else so they're the ones who look like freaks.

That means the turning point was Charlie Kirk losing an artery
it's very fitting that in retrospect, Trump's failure to oust Jimmy Kimmel was the point that his administration turned. It's been all losses ever since

Correct. Also, to be clear, the right has not had intellectual standards since (generously) the 1990s. The only thing that has changed is that they are no longer willing or able to fake it.
Part of the problem is that liberal media keeps pretending that the right has “intellectual standards” when the rights idea of intellectual standards is RFK “I Like Bathing In Sewage” Jr being in charge of all of America’s health.
The controversy over the Heritage Foundation illustrates the collapse of intellectual standards on the right—a profound problem that Donald Trump has exploited and exacerbated, @jonathanbchait.bsky.social argues.

I don't mean to downplay this because it's fucked up and bad but I don't think this is really going to be equivalent to Iraq. We're going to drop a bunch of bombs, not invade and occupy the country
Echoes of 2003, jfc. Still feels like the media is waaaaay underplaying the possibility of this. I think it's such a hilariously stupid idea that most 'serious' media types don't actually think it will happen.

I saw a compelling case (at least for someone like me, who knows nothing) that DB Cooper was a guy who pulled the same stunt maybe... a year or two later? This latter guy died or was caught or something.

My problem with the law as practiced in the US is it has become a procedural obstacle-course / fun house where the spirit of the law barely matters unless you're in front of a judge who actually cares about that stuff.

If I'm understanding this correctly, the government can intentionally fuck up an indictment just before the statue of limitations timer runs out and, as a reward, get an extra 6 months on the SOL clock to get an indictment that actually sticks. Doesn't sound right to me!
Exactly right: bsky.app/profile/brad...
There's at least an argument that this dismissal will give DOJ more time to bring new charges against Comey, and this time to avoid the landmines it seems to have stepped on during its first attempt.

18 U.S.C. § 3288 grants six months to re-charge after an indictment is dismissed "for any reason."

I don’t know what the Supreme Court will do, but I am confident that at the District Court level it is still the case that the Pentagon cannot recall a sitting US Senator to active duty in order to court martial him for something he said. Article 1, Section 6, among other constitutional provisions.

No offense to anyone here, and maybe it's just a difference in UK vs American English that I'm failing to appreciate, but >50% of the arguments I have on this site where I begin to wonder if the person I'm talking to is genuinely illiterate are with British people.

You don't hate the press enough
Over many interviews, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. told Michael Scherer about how he plans to remake America’s public-health system. Can he lead the scientific establishment he’s spent much of his life crusading against?
