Almost every week I see someone declare that they will never, ever vote for Newsom because of some position he took on trans women in sports. Fuck every other marginalized community, I guess
johnbrownstan.bsky.social
"I don't care about mass deportations, family separation, ICE goons terrorizing minorities, or trans rights enough for these to outweigh my dislike of assault weapons bans" <--- profoundly immoral.

And yet, almost every day, I see versions of this where people think they're taking the high ground!
johnbrownstan.bsky.social
I have heterodox gun control views for a Democrat. I could, if I wanted to, refuse to vote for or support any Democrat that doesn't adopt my heterodox views.

But that would be deeply immoral and selfish of me! No matter how right I think I am, other people's interests matter too!
johnbrownstan.bsky.social
I won't elaborate with specifics because I don't feel like getting brigaded today, but there are certain people who seem to believe that their political pet issues matters more than literally anything else, and I don't know what to call that except unacceptably selfish.

Today marks the two-year anniversary of the horrific October 7 attack.

As we mourn the 1,218 lives lost that day, let us also keep alive the dream of a lasting peace and a better future for all.

Ceasefire now. Every hostage must come home. And a safer world for everyone.

2022 Kia Niro EV:

~23,000 miles
~4,900 kWh at home @ ~$0.18/kWh
~900 kWh via public chargers @ ~$0.40/kWh

Total:
Electricity: ~5,800 kWh
Cost: ~$1,230
Cost per mile: ~5.3¢

That's wild. Why is electricity so expensive where you live?
johnbrownstan.bsky.social
Yeah, the fast charging is actually a little more expensive than gas. But we take road trips maybe once a year and that's the only time we fast charge, so it's not much of an issue.
johnbrownstan.bsky.social
They're much smoother and quieter. Also something you become nose blind to with ICE cars is the smell.

Accidentally leave a light on in your car overnight? No problem, it won't even come close to draining a kwh of the battery.
johnbrownstan.bsky.social
That's obviously slower than a gas pump, but the car has a 300+ mile range at 90%, so you just stop at the Walmart chargers and enjoy your break from driving before you take off again.
johnbrownstan.bsky.social
The one big complaint I used to have about EVs was how slow they charged even at fast chargers, but that's not really an issue anymore since almost all EVs now have higher voltage internals. My EV9 can go from 10% to 90% in like 30 minutes.
johnbrownstan.bsky.social
We are having solar installed, and once it's in place our charging will be functionally free at least half the year, and very cheap the rest of the year.

EVs also require approximately zero maintenance. We need to have our tires rotated sometimes. The wiper blades occasionally need replacing.
johnbrownstan.bsky.social
We have two EVs. Currently my wife charges them at work at a rate of (for our commutes/typical driving) 17 cents for every 4.5 miles. For a 30 mpg car, this comes out to about $1.13 per gallon of gas equivalent.
jamellebouie.net
we charge our hyundai ioniq 5 around once every two to three weeks at a muncipal charger and i’d say it runs about $9 for 250 miles of range.

What's there to explain, exactly? Is anyone claiming climate change is solved?

We're undergoing a revolution in electricity generation, to the point that fossil fuels in that sector may be fully displaced in a decade or so. That doesn't mean climate change is solved, but it's an important step.
johnbrownstan.bsky.social
Nah, character restrictions are good. They force people to keep things as snappy as possible. The last thing I want is people writing books, like they do on Twitter

This just popped up in my Reddit feed. Hasan Piker shocking his dog for moving around too much behind him. Someone please take that poor dog away from this asshole.

i have very little patience for people negatively polarizing against somebody good because you found somebody you like even better. we have multiple strong candidates in the Maine primary. whoever wins will be a good nominee.

As for Level 1 HQLA, the only thing on this list I think US banks have any serious exposure to are US treasuries. So, debt ceiling

Hard to imagine a non-financial issue with contagion, I think.
johnbrownstan.bsky.social
Yeah, that could do it, but that's a very different scenario
