Has there ever been a government in NZ that hated free speech & endorsed cancel culture as much as this one?

Oi, Labour people! You need to replace your leader.

If your Chippy tries to corral everyone to the "centre" we just get another Labour-led govt that is devoted to neolib continuity and alienates an increasingly hard-pressed electorate. Do you seriously want us to end up like the US?

Really?
Have we found out their party president is a sexual abuser and they've assisted him to cover it up, as per ACT?
Have we found out they have received illegal donations like NZ First?
Have we found out they've received payment for favourable policies, as per the entire Govt?
No.

Chris Hipkins suggesting that Te Pāti Māori appeared to be a long way from playing a constructive role in a future government. Maybe because they have not covered up historic sexual abuse, have not received illegal funding, have not received money for policy changes, and have not had a whole series of candidates and MPs exposed for wildly inappropriate behaviour etc etc?

as the famous musical saying goes, when the string is loose then hamas is loose, when the string is tight then hamas will fight. nothing bad can happen, it can only good happen.

This is why I say Trump's line on Korea 'after listening for 10 minutes, I realised it's not so easy' is the ur-text for his foreign policy. He is simultaneously aggressively incurious, happy to flipflop & easily influenced.

Palestine has been hit with more tons of bombs in 2 years than the total of London, Dresden, Hamburg, Hiroshima & Nagasaki in WW2.

Now the UK, Australia & Canada decide that while they continue to arm Israel, they will make recognition of Palestine conditional on the victim unilaterally disarming.

If you read headlines you could be forgiven for thinking Shane Jones/ New Zealand First want to renationalise the electricity market.
Jones wrote a letter about options for changing regulatory settings to produce more gas... & even that isn't NZF policy.
The headlines were just not accurate.

Great point, def truth to that. But even so, I think a significant degree of the choice of language is based on anticipated outcomes.

Who do you think makes the decision that an MP should resign?
l11p.bsky.social
These Ministers can break basically any rules & never get fired. So media has largely retired using words like 'embattled' or 'disgraced', because they know they won't get resignations. The idea of media pressure forcing a Minister out was always made up.

Casey Costello breached rules by giving tobacco industry-friendly document to health officials
But the inquiry has still not revealed who wrote the 'mystery document', which claimed nicotine was no more harmful than caffeine.

they just want everyone to have fun.

Most Nat voters wanted Act in Govt & most Nat voters wanted a single Party govt.
l11p.bsky.social
A higher % of voters from National, Labour & Act wanted NZF in government than the % who actually voted for NZF.

Most Nat voters want Act to be in Govt. Most Labour voters want Greens in Govt.

Interesting how unpopular one-party govt has become.

Paywall now lifted: New data from the long-running New Zealand Election Study shows the vast majority of those who voted for the National Party in 2023 didn’t want to see New Zealand First play a role in the Government after the election.
newsroom.co.nz/2025/09/01/j...
Just 10% of National voters wanted NZ First in govt
National Party voters preferred a single party to a coalition, saying it would provide more stability and be better able to make tough decisions.

This is exactly the sort of news story the regime is attempting to prevent with its move to classify health professionals as public servants in the Pae Ora Amendment Bill.
