Yeah it was "okay I'm getting on the tram now" "we can go one stop too!" FFS...

Uuugh I've been recently cornered by two after a public talk... "Why can't someone debate our claims? Doesn't have to be a professor, they can just send their young scientists...", but thankfully buggered off before I could tell them "we have no time for more important things either".

I'm a scientist, not just a brooding Hungarian or whatever you're alluding to. Nuance and proper understanding of data matters to me. So broad (and wrong) statements like "bombers just transited Hungarian airspace" rub me the wrong way. You can just say "yeah some bombing happened", and be done.
lacalaca85.bsky.social
This research article estimates *22 thousand* metric tons of bombs dropped on Hungary by the US Air force, mainly targeting the infrastructure of the capital. So why do you insist it was nothing?

You might've spent 12 years here but I've been here for 40 years and counting and know my county's history *pretty well*.
lacalaca85.bsky.social
Mate. "No air campaign" is different from a minor campaign. Or you claim those bridges and factories bombed themselves? Land campaign was done by the Soviets (still considered a member of Allied forces in 1944) who had to lay siege against Budapest.
lacalaca85.bsky.social
Well I mean, except for these documented cases targeting Hungarian rail and industrial infrastructure...
lacalaca85.bsky.social
So if the Russians supposedly pushed the Germans out from Hungary on their own, why do we keep finding US bombs in the ground TO THIS DAY, 80 years later? Like these US-made Frag-20s, found last year at Budapest Airport. These were dropped by US bombers to fight Nazis, not sold, you idiot.

Lol the Nobels can't even acknowledge women's contribution to discovery. But sure let's acknowledge The Machines.
Headline from an article in Nature this week that states "Prizes must recognize machine contributions to discovery. The future of science will be written by humans and machines together. Awards should reflect that reality."

If you ever watched the Wire you don't ask dumb shit like "how could've AI helped writing it". FFS.

David Simon, creator of ‘The Wire’, being interviewed by Ari Shapiro (NPR)
SHAPIRO: OK, so you've spent your career creating television without Al, and I could imagine today you thinking, boy, I wish I had had that tool to solve those thorny problems...
SIMON: What?
SHAPIRO: ...Or saying...
SIMON: You imagine that?
SHAPIRO: ...Boy, if that had existed, it would have screwed me over.
SIMON: I don't think Al can remotely challenge what writers do at a fundamentally creative level.
SHAPIRO: But if you're trying to transition from scene five to scene six, and you're stuck with that transition, you could imagine plugging that portion of the script into an Al and say, give me 10 ideas for how to transition this.
SIMON: I'd rather put a gun in my mouth.

Well, this explains things... Mostly, why I'm designated as #m0m among the juniors 😂

Maria's arrival was the best thing that happened to Hungarian astronomy and astrophysics over the last decade. Hands down.

Shortly after becoming a citizen, Maria Lugaro became the first woman astronomer to be elected to the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Congratulations! ❤️ 💪👏

This moment from our latest episode with science writer @edyong209.bsky.social is 🔥

We asked Ed — how do we talk up the benefits of science in the face of government cuts? He told us that's the wrong approach. 🧪

It's extreme tunnel vision. "They were only 8 degrees apart? What else could it be?"

Also, roughly 2 million Gaia sources and god knows how many asteroids in that area.

"the “Wow! Signal” was separated by approximately 4 degrees in RA and 8 degrees in Dec from the direction of 3I/ATLAS. The chance of two random directions in the sky being aligned to that level is about 0.6 percent." - Sure. Wanna know how many entries are in SIMBAD in an 8 deg radius? this many:
SIMBAD coordinate query page around the position of the Wow! signal. Finds 184136 objects.

Hungary has been very kind to me, and their intellectual/creative class has a lot to teach those of us in the US about how to navigate and resist against an authoritarian government. I want to visit New Zealand, and will, hopefully sooner than later.

I tell people that the problem is not coming up with ideas, I think of a couple dozen of them a day. The real problem is knowing which of the damn things is any good for writing up. Most of them are junk. I have to let them roll around in my brain a while to find out which is which.

Do you have a clever/pithy/useful answer when people ask where you get your ideas? If so, can I steal it?

I fully agree!

I would add diversity is a wealth and, as such, must be welcomed, preserved, and respected in every sphere.

Respect for diversity is, in fact, the foundation of freedom.

Encouraging diversity among scientists is ethically right and also leads to better science.
