Lanoue, trans & notes

According to the Pure Land Buddhism that Issa believed in, the only path to the Pure Land and enlightenment is to "cling" to the liberating power of Amida Buddha. In this haiku, the butterfly is a living emblem of faith.

This is Coe Fen in Cambridge, a watercolour drawing from 1998. The tower in the middle distance is the Pitt Building and the other tower is the United Reform Church. This was done on the spot with watercolour and Indian ink.

"Memo" has been harvesting Salinas CAs strawberries for 13 years. "I'm picking the last harvest of 2025. I'm tired & my back hurts from being bent over all day, but I must pick quickly. I work piece rate and the more boxes I harvest the more I earn to feed my family." #WeFeedYou

Farm workers are harvesting green onions by hand in Kern County CA. They bend over for long hours, cutting, bunching, and stacking the onions into crates loaded onto nearby trailers. The work is physically demanding, requiring precision and endurance under the sun. #WeFeedYou

2025 is quickly fading. 2026 is almost here.

You have 31 days to get all of that 2025 writing in.

31 days.

Can you wrap up that novel? That short story? Those poems?

You can get there. I believe you can!

I made the Chicago Reader's Best of Chicago 2025 - Novelist list for voting. Thank you.

I'm thankful for the Chicago literary community. To all of Chicago.

I love writing. It's all I ever want to do, and eat and sleep and spend time with my family and go to a White Sox game.
