Music. Running. Dog walking. Vegetables.
I circle round the sun until some day I won’t.
I have so much work that I could be doing but I think my brain has shut down.

AMN Reviews: Boundaries Festival 21-22 November 2025
By Lauren Redhead Where should you go to look for contemporary music explosions in November? It used to be that there was no singular answer to this question, but in the last 5 years Boundaries Festival has begun to establish Sunderland as a locus for the experimental, the compelling, the weird and the unknown. While the city is perhaps more widely known for its long history of ship-building than of contemporary music, the festival finds itself amid the city council’s regeneration projects and offers its audiences a new experience and environment to enjoy music in, as well as the music itself.

How many people are employed by these institutions?
Not just academic staff but professional staff, security, catering, etc?
What is their contribution to their areas in terms of £, culture, services?
What access do their students actually have to other providers?
How does this compare to steel?
Chief exec of OfS 'said the OfS believes there are 24 institutions at risk of exiting the market in the next 12 months, seven of which are large providers with more than 3,000 students. There are another 25 or so institutions of various sizes at risk over a two- to three-year period, she added.'
Seven ‘large providers’ at risk of going under in the next year
Skills minister says no higher education institutions are at imminent risk of collapse this year but OfS confirms more than 20 providers are being closely monitored

The second problem with this — after the fact that it will bankrupt a bunch of institutions — is that the government doesn’t seem to know if it wants to a) raise lots of money from intentional students or b) discourage universities from relying on international students. You can’t have both!!
These are HEPI estimates of the 20 institutions affected: I think this illustrates the impact if the tariff is absorbed in full by institutions.

What share of the 6% tariff different universities may try to pass on to fees - or the impact might be on demand if they did - is not publicly known.

Today’s question for the Blueskymind: what(tf) is emo?

Back in the day, music I like(d) was called variously rock/punk/grunge/(post) hardcore. Now those exact same bands are described as emo.

What are the properties of emo, that it seems to have swallowed up all these other genres?

Today a PhD student passed their viva (hooray!).

It turned out neither they nor the examiners knew the thing about the snake.
Is the snake Very Online?
Does everyone not know of the snake?

I have quite a lot of questions about ghosts. 👻
I’ve decided to make them into a thread in case anyone who knows about ghosts can provide some information.

Thanks in advance.

Really need new publicity photos! The ones I keep using are 12 years old.
So I also need someone to take the photos and ideally do this without my knowledge or I’ll look weird.
If anyone has come up with the answer to this dilemma please let me know.

The news about Nottingham Music is awful. I hope the means to resist this can be found. I feel like every day in HE we’re dealing with some decision or other that is part of this whole picture. What will be left when everything is cut? It’s impossible.

It’s the time of year where for weeks on end I get to spend my evening calming down the dog who is beside himself at every loud bang.
Yes, we have every single ****ing thing marketed to calm down dogs.
The thing that would work is banning fireworks.
There’s no argument in their favour.

Since allowing the dog to sleep in the bedroom I’ve discovered that the reason he spends his whole day sleeping in different dog beds is that he definitely doesn’t spend the night sleeping.
And now he goes in the bedroom at night it’s going to be work to make him go back in his dog bedroom.
