I’ve finished my first semester in Baruch College’s MA Arts Administration program. I got two As and a B+. Even with 17 years away from a classroom, adjusting to classes where I read the Harvard Business Review and had to define promissory estoppel, I felt fearless. More to come this fall.

In the crowd yesterday for No Other Choice, the new Park Chan-wook movie, at the New York Film Festival. A funny, thrilling, mean, beautiful movie about doing the wrong thing in the face of awful breaks. A story about one person that zoomed out and became wildly timely about right now. I loved it.

#FridayReads: Omar El Akkad takes us on his personal journey from Egypt to Qatar to Canada to the USA. Offering sharp, essential critiques of The West, ones that have only been made sharper by its complicity and support of the genocide in Gaza. A great book that feels incredibly urgent to right now.

A thing I love about the art at the Astoria Blvd subway station is at night it acts as a natural camera filter for Triborough Bridge traffic. “I AM A RAINBOW TOO” by Jeffrey Gibson.

The IFC Center peephole. Next time you’re at West 3rd Street and 6th Avenue stop by and you can see what’s playing on (some) of the screen in IFC’s Theatre 3.

Yesterday I attended The Rolling Library’s Queer Book Club on the bustling 31st Avenue Open Streets. Great talk about Times Square Red, Times Square Blue by Samuel R. Delany: “Connecting” vs. “networking,” when a scene doesn’t relocate, but entirely ends, the importance of journaling in memoir.

Last night at The Astoria Bookshop Storytelling Show we heard about waiting til the 4th date, last trip with mom, 1st heartbreak, pet setting, cursive, a pizzeria fight, an awful job interview, an autographed hat, working at a bookstore, collecting hard hats, a friend beating cancer. Next show 11/6.

Another 25 hour Yom Kippur fast is over. It is always meaningful for me to feel that hunger, think of ways I was not who I want to be in the past year, imagine how I can be better in the new year, and to get the slightest hint of an idea of what the desperation of deep hunger does to the human mind.

It has been very heartening to see so many people tagging these NYC subway ads for an “AI friend” service. We already have an organic “large language model”: Commuting New Yorkers with pens.

For years I’ve wanted to catch a Phillies home game with Paige’s family on a trip to her native Philadelphia. Yesterday I caught the Phillies Game 162 with the LaRoss gang. Took SEPTA there. Caught a walkoff win. A huge thank you to Donna for the birthday scoreboard shoutout!

I turn 40 today. I refuse to give into the Sad Birthday Industrial Complex. Aging, and the perspective and wisdom that comes with it, is a gift and a privilege. One I’ve seen denied to far too many people. So instead I’ll give in to the Post a Cute Selfie on Your Landmark Birthday Industrial Complex

I caught the Lionel Messi Show in Queens tonight. He scored twice. NYCFC had a GTA-themed banner drop and a giant inflatable pigeon outside the ballpark. I laughed very hard as an NYCYC fan taunted someone on Inter Miami CF after a yellow card…with a Metrocard.

Lovely to gather with friends last night for Rosh Hashanah. Express gratitude for fruit, hope for a sweet 5786, and…in perhaps my favorite blessing in Judaism…express gratitude at having reached the only thing that ever exists: The present moment we have arrived at. L’shanah tova. לְשָׁנָה טוֹבָה.

This is a fantastic sounding, free, new open mic at @hivemindbookstore.bsky.social in Bushwick, Brooklyn. Instead of sharing your own writing, you share some one else’s writing you love. It’s like #FridayReads posts, but in the form of a live show.
