My current horror shortstory/novella is more supernatural in nature so tech is not a central theme or reliable for the characters.

Q2, #HorrorWritersChat! You lot were chatting so much I ran over. Hmpf.
Anyway you know the theme. Hit me with it.

I write by the name of L. Bay Riley, I write in a wide range of genre and am working on a horror shortstory/novella atm. (main project in the publishing pipeline). Libre Office all the way until it goes to my editor, then it is Google Docs

(First time doing this prompt-
Dum, Dum, Dum!!!!!!!!!! Assemble, #HorrorWritersChat writers. Assemble, and give us your shit for Q1.
Your name, your number, but not your links. You know the game.
Leave that for the end. Right? Right.

Beatrice hates cleaning (general house cleaning. Kitchen cleaning is different). She also hates those that kill indiscriminately and those that are uncaring for others.

Roy hates out-of-touch aristocrats who desire more power and control (i.e. his clan).
What does your MC hate doing? Ginger hates being forced to socialize with pretentious people #writingq #WritingCommunity

"Unfortunately" Grove largely resembles NYC architecture wise. Nothing of note in that generalized area. But I will say that all buildings are enchanted, in addition to engineering, for added support and resilience. But that is not exactly a style of architecture.

We talking ARCHITECTURAL STYLES. 🤩 Materials, methods, all that good stuff that goes into how it looks.

Keep in mind this is for the general "whole." Save your specific fancy structures for tomorrow. The manmade landmarks get their own day.

Looking amazing 😁
Beatrice in her tank top. Might change the color. Possibly black or grey. I’ll figure it out.

Since Old Fangs is involved, when technology advanced to usher in modern cities, Grove was meticulously planned. It has a strict grid structure, with various entry and exit points for Fangs upper fortress and garages.

The aesthetics are for tomorrow! Today's just the overall size and layout. Was it thoroughly planned with grid structures or did it grow informally and organically across the years?

Perhaps some sector or districts talk if this is a tad too simple... 👀

Beatrice doesn’t really have many hobbies at the beginning of the story. Roy, secondary MC, is a gamer. He tries to get Beatrice into it but she is content with watching.
What is your MC’s hobby? Ginger loves to read and study people #writingq #WritingCommunity

There is a small population of those who follow the Maker's religion. But most would be considered agnostic/atheist. People generally just want a life of peace and coexistence. Grove in particular is one of the more diverse cities, in both culture and daimon species.

Grove's food culture is pretty cosmopolitan. A "melting pot" of cuisine. That being said, Grove is famous for its pizza. It is considered the city's official dish. Why? The widely popular video game character Tony Redgrave* loves pizza! (The series began in Grove and that is a source of pride).

Nice and easy: FOOD.

Food is a HUGE part of culture everywhere. What's your place's Buffalo wings or Philly cheesesteak or (sorry go ahead and insert your regional food of choice)?

#HeirsofAlighieri is a modern setting with magical elements. So their is a lot of technology that we have around us today. Magic, domestically speaking, is primarily enchantments for stability or things like fire proofing. There are advanced "magic technology" that is reserved for Hunters. 1/ 5

Moving onto the technology or magic drives this place! Are you sci-fi? Fantasy with magic giving access to near-equivalent comforts of the modern day? Alternative Earth that took a completely different tech dev path?

Plus an extra question for thought...

Playing catch up haha

In Grove, the main populace, like much of the Guild Lands, has a desire to live peacefully. Daimon and half-breeds are freely embraced. The main attitude of note would be the Fangs. They protect and watch, but refuse to do so intrusively. Old Fangs has surveillance set- 1/ 4

This, like your demographics, might be a broad ask; yolo, it's Friday!

Depending on your scope, this could vary a lot, but what defines what makes your people, them?

Eh, um, gardener/pantser so… yeah. Form and refine as I go. Occasionally I craft a very deliberate character for a story/situation. But mostly I just “play with the clay”.

Being the elaborate and fancy namer that I am, the language is called Common! In #HeirsofAlighieri the whole world knows Common (there are different dialects). But there are also numerous “code”/custom cultural languages.

*Common is written to be any language that the reader knows.

Nothing clever, it's on the tin. Languages: just one? Several? Did it (or plural) evolve from another language in your world as something mutually intelligible or is it just a regional dialect?

Grove has a good mix of human and daimon (human allied demons). Most of the Guild Land city-states have a mixed population. Grove is one of the better living cities, crime is low and there is a decent education quotient. There is a poor population, but they aren’t without support. 1/4

Let's get into the people now, and take this as far as you want. Demographics: looking at the ages, genders, orientations, races/species/ethnicities, socioeconomics, education levels, etc...

There's a lot that can be packed into this response if desired!

To be completely honest, Grove was the first name that came to mind when I wrote Beatrice coming to the city. Nothing particular about the name otherwise. (Altho, Grove is the name of the town in the pc game Fate. A good childhood memory).

Another city in #HeirsofAlighieri however did get 1/2
#Septopolis 9

It's naming time. For those who haven't firmed up a name yet: consider the landscape and its features, important people, or the place's purpose. 🧵1/2

Now, for both parties: Is there reason or meaning behind why you (or its founders) picked this name?

I don't have much lore about who originally founded the city. They were never quite as important as Sithin (Old Fangs) and Alighieri. While not strictly related to Grove itself, Sithin went through a betrayal and lost his usual level headed leadership. This lead him to conduct an assault that- 1/2
#Septopolis 8

Since this might have been inadvertently covered yesterday... Who specifically were the founders? Maybe some history on them or the legend surrounding a hero.

Take yesterday's specific why to a specific who. 😅
(I'm not updating the card, I'm lazy.)

Before the Emperor Wars, Grove was just one of many human cities. But it was a city that Alighieri chose as a base. Soon after, the Midian werewolf commander Sithin was swayed to humanity's side and helped train the human inhabitants to push back the demon hordes. Sithin would eventually take on 1/2

We've got resources and fancy natural spaces covered. Now, let's move to why it's even here.

In your world's history, what was the reason this place was established? Was it as something like a trade hub or military outpost? Potential not yet discovered?

Natural wonders…nothing in particular for Grove. Unless you count the inactive Fringe Stone. But that is hardly beautiful. A small dark stone monolith. And it is just one of many throughout the world. The demon realm that Grove is connected to tho is called the Glistening Fields.

The world is beautiful, and that probably goes for yours too. There's surely places even in the most grimdark of settings that could be considered wonders.
